Are the RS OEM BMC filters identical to the BMC aftermarket filters for our cars?...

I'll clarify. Are the RS filters oiled?

Owning both 718 Spyder and 991.2 GT3 touring, that runs the BMC as OEM, I can say they are basically the same type as BMC aftermarket: oiled cotton. As I can't see myself spending 700 USD on a new set every couple thousand kilometers (no paper or aftermarket option and the recommended change interval is ridiculously long), I will be washing, drying and re-oiling myself. Risky business I know, but I believe the red color of the filter oil provides good enough guidance of how much was applied.

Using BMC for ages, using them in my 981 and 718, cleaned them a few times, but they are not really expensive when you buy them directly from Italy, € 125, so just replace them when dirty enough. Just inspect them yearly.

Now that I have two sets, swap out every 5K miles, or sooner pending usage. Clean one set, replace the other, rinse and repeat.

The image shows the new filer and used - keep in mind, that my car saw a decent amount of daily driving, and Im not talking only sunny days. Replaced about two weeks ago.

BoxKing,

We are of the same Mindset buddy on the "BMC Performance" ..... "air-intake-filters".

Note*
I don't track my 2021 GT4

I also have elected to run the Performance BMC intake filters.
In fact I had the stock filters replaced with the BMC Performance intake filters Before I even took delivery.
I feel pretty darn comfortable that the shop foreman (Nick) with over 20-Years of experience.
He's done all the changes/work on my now 2-year old, plus 9,000 miles 2021 GT4.
I have zero doubt he would have told me on the Front-End NOT to run the BMC Performance intake filters if he even thought there could be an issue doing so.

BTW,
See & Read the images below the text here:

For those Rennlist members that just might {Not} know this is why I changed to the BMC Performance "Air-Intake-Filters".

BMC air filters
Factory replacement air intake filters for 991.2 GT3 Touring models.
The factory uses these high flow BMC air filters as standard equipment,
a custom designed filter with original Porsche part number and Porsche stamp on the side.

My opinion is, "it's best to be well informed".

If you don't track and run dirty roads then your filters won't look like mine did. The side air scoops pick up dirt and brake dust thrown up by the front tires causing accelerated filter restriction when used in certain scenarios. IMHO High Flow Filters are in search of a problem not a solution to a problem. Yes I come from a farming back ground and have seen what bad filtering can do to an engine over time and it isn't pretty.

I'm guessing swapping out the brake pads to low dust pads will help a bit in keeping that out of the intake scoops...
Good info here... I'm sure OEM or BMC filters (which seem to be OEM filters too) will be fine for our vehicles... I'll consider the BMC filters when I replace my OEM ones prob next year.

MrFunk,

Smart decision on going with the BMC Performance "air-intake-filters" next time around.

If you like and enjoy the air intake sounds ???
You do get more of that with the addition of the BMC Performance filters.

What does Porsche recommend for changing the air filer in a GT4/Spyder? How many miles and/or years?

As in expensive the BMC Performance "intake-filters" are 1 have my changed with the Yearly Service.
That way I don't overlook having it done.
I just had mine done with the 2nd year annual service.
That's the images in the above Post ^^^

I'd venture to say most of it is brake dust.... the doors and sides of my car are coated in a fine layer of brake dust after a track weekend... a lot of brake dust gets sucked into the intakes.

And track debris I have picked a lot of track rubber off the air scoops intake screens.

Everyone’s driving styles, conditions, and tracking can play a roll in the longevity of either OEM or BMC filters. Take Terry’s BMC filters, his “used” BMC’s look like they could go for another 300,000 miles! Take mine after 5000-7000 miles which look like they were soaked in toilet water. Since I had driven my car in the rain (couldn’t avoid as it was my DD at the beginning), they not only collected debris from the brakes/road, but compounding the issue was dirty water. Im interested to see what mine will look like when I replace them again in the Fall now that the car doesn’t go out in the rain, or salted roads, but will see roughly 6-9 track days.

The thing that would concern me more for others is the frequency which they check their OEM/BMC filters. Taking apart the trim isn’t difficult, though many steer clear of the tedious stuff like this, and leave the work to their Indy/Dealer, and only when the intervals call for it in the manual. Although I too fall victim to not making this a so called regular PM check, like one can do with checking brake pad life; it would be nice if someone made a DIY retrofit for the center carpet piece (foam backed) for simple removal, leaving just the DME removal for access the filter on the right - leaving no trim to be removed.
