Default It's official. I'm not one of you anymore. (BMW Z4 Discussion)

Welp...it's official. I put in an order for the new manual Z4 M40i.

After my BGTS4.0 was totaled in a rear-end, I tried to get another allocation for a BGTS4.0 with no luck. Porsche's artificial scarcity is ridiculous. Maybe it's the stealership's fault, maybe it's the fault of the "brokers". I don't know, but it's lame. I need a 6 cyl manual roadster to enjoy, not a place on some lists for the chance to maybe get an allocation in a year or two or three. Peace out, guys. I hope you get your dream cars.

Why not just pick up another BGTS on the secondary market?

i always liked the looks of the newest generation Z4. When are you expecting delivery? I’d like to hear your comparison between the two.

Enjoy the new ride!! Post some pics!

The Z4 is getting some good early reviews! I wanted to consider it, but I keep remembering what it was like to test drive the 718, and what it felt like around that first corner. So yummy.

The allocation game is pretty ridiculous. I couldn’t find one that was reasonably-priced ( for me) for over a year so bought a used 2022 Boxster 25. Lucked out.
z4 has a great engine and the price is great.

The process to get my Spyder was very stressful. I had a lot of anxiety throughout... It's a car that I knew I'd keep for ever, and it was the ONLY sports car I was prepared to replace my very well sorted S2000 with, so I pushed through...
Enjoy the BMW...! I'm sure it will be a fun sports car!

I have a 2022 Boxster GTS 4.0 PDK and also a 2022 Z4 M40i.

The Z4 offers many advantages over Boxster GTS 4.0: ride quality, responsiveness of steering, large trunk, shelf behind rear seats, roomier interior, better interior technology, possibly the physical appearance (clamshell front bonnet, aggressive side profile, etc), free maintenance for 3 years, cheaper maintenance, much more car for the money and therefore a better buy for many, AND IT'S FASTER. I am talking automatic for automatic. The Z4 M40i is really fast. And the 8-speed ZF is way, way better than PDK. I'm tired of the PDK fluffery all over the automotive press. It's just not so terrific. PDK never knows what gear to be in during aggressive driving. And it's slow and clunky. BMW's 8-Speed ZF? Perfection. Instantaneous and smooth shifting. Put it in Sport+ and it'll do everything correctly. The PDK in Sport+ can't be trusted and ultimately manual mode is necessary.

Boxster GTS 4.0 advantages over Z4 M40i: naturally aspirated engine screams with the violence we crave, handling is better, Porsche branded vehicle.

The Z4 handles really well, but since it has a long front and is front-engine, it takes a real driving expert to derive all its handling capability. It can become quite tricky if pushed to the limit. Some might enjoy sliding it around. The Boxster can be taken to the limit without hesitation and the car will do exactly what you want it to do.

Aesthetically, I think the Boxter still carries more appeal . . . but the 718 platform has become quite dated in its appearance.

Performance-wise . . .

I have never driven a Z4 M40i. My suspicion is the Z4 does not offer the same handling as the Boxter, however, I am certain the Z4 handles wonderfully and offers way more than the common roadways permit in terms of pushing any limit.

In terms of hp/tq, again, I am certain the Z4 offers way more than the common roadways permit. In fact, there is ample number of driving enthusiasts out there who rave about how enjoyable the Mazda Miata is on the common roadways BECAUSE it is what many consider ‘underpowered' . . . the Z4 is certainly not 'underpowered,' but less might prove to be more.

Finally, I have personally jumped back and forth between Porsche and ///M brands over the years. Never been disappointed with either brand in terms of delivering on expectation.

Enjoy!

I rented a Z4 M40i on Turo for a week and pinged it around Sedona. The B58 is just such a good engine, punchy, linear, and with the top down sounds amazing. Nice chassis too, responsive, quite playful when pushed. Car feels very stable, really nice feeling of heft when putting around. Cruised on the freeway no problem, reasonably refined. Now they sell it in manual (green over tan?) its a very compelling option, I would certainly take it over any 4 cylinder Boxster. Over a GTS 4.0 that's more tricky to call. With the Z4 you get really torquey punch, much shorter gearing, slightly better all rounder. But you miss the precision of the Porsche, the lighter weight, the tactility, and the NA scream assuming you put an exhaust on. The stock Z4 exhaust sounds better than the 718 stock exhaust to me (the stock 718 exhaust is weak IMO). I really enjoyed the character of the Z4 I must say, I think at lower speeds with the B58 and shorter gearing its probably more fun than a 718. Stupidly thick steering wheel though, like all modern BMW's. The 718 might feel a bit more 'special' though, but is it worth $20k more? Hard to say.

Nice analysis!

I think you inadvertently missed the computation when you said $20k more… I think it’s more like $40k more with equivalent options. The GTS 4.0 has become damn expensive. We are talking $77k vs $115-120k identically equipped, no?

Not sure what is going on with Porsche. Pricing, availability....everything. What's behind all of this?

In my head the GTS has always been around $100k, I spend a lot of time dreaming on the configurator but not looking at the GTS

If the difference is $40k - I'd take the manual Z4.. it was a really impressive bit of kit. In fact I liked the B58 engine so much a bought an M340i

Violation of the law.

Violation of anti-trust laws. Price fixing. Conspiracy to fix pricing.

It happens every day. I’ve been a direct witness to it several times. Many Porsche dealers talk to each other (illegally) about price. The consumer doesn’t have a chance when there’s no competition. Just think about it — when was the last time a Porsche dealer needed to compete with another dealer?

Not a bad choice as i am eyeing that too, isnt the new manual Z4 M40i available only on 25 ? Is BMW taking orders. Whats the hp/torque compared to GTS 4.0
