Over the years, I have become much more focused on the enjoyment I will get for how I actually drive and use a car, as opposed to some theoretical ideal based on just the car's capabilities.
Waiting for the person to whom you directed the question to reply, but I’ll chime in as follows:

Better? That’s a loaded word but to name a few cars that are worth a drive for <180-inch and <3500-lbs sports car comparison: Ferrari 360, Ferrari F430, 458 Italia (without getting too deep down the Ferrari rabbit hole), 981 Spyder/GT4, 982 Spyder/GT4, 991.2 GT3 (for direct comparison), 991.1 Carrera S/GTS, 991.2 Carrera S/GTS with rear-wheel steering, 992 Carrera S/GTS with rear-wheel steering, BMW Z4 M40i, Audi TT RS, C7 Corvette.

Each of these offers one characteristic or another superior to what the 982 GTS 4.0 offers; and the 982 GTS 4.0 holds its own (or exceeds) in at least one category or another. The best overall package is a judgment call akin to beauty in the eyes of the beholder.

I don't have a fleet of Ferraris like y'all but I do have a four car garage with one empty space and am seriously thinking about adding a cheap backroad buggy for the sole purpose of having daily fun in any weather. I'm surrounded by epic roads and feel like every day I'm not in the canyons is a day wasted. A Mazda might work.

Interesting discussion. I’m also in the life is short mode at 77.
Always been a car guy when kids read comic books I read car books built my first go kart at 12.
I just received a 992 GTS manual (42nd car 11th 911) I also have a 992 Gt3 touring Manual but I missed the low end torque the turbo..
It’s funny when I drive the GTS, which is a great car. I miss the throttle response of the Gt3.
I’m going keep them both for a while see what happens.
GTS is a sharp knife. the Gt3 is a scalpel .
I wouldn’t be doing this if I was 10 years younger.

Hence the fact that she's an EX-wife! This is all fun. A hobby that we are very passionate about. I find that the people who have negative things to say about such things often don't have anything in their own lives that they are passionate about.

Ok.....I sort of lumped the Porsche 4.0 cars all together as a general category. Maybe I shouldn't have done that.

Good point about throttle response. I have found the throttle response is better on my 991.2 Touring then it is on the GT4 RS. Maybe it's due to my Touring has 27k miles and the 4 RS has 1600 miles?

Maybe it's due to one is Manual and one is PDK? I'm not sure but it is noticable and I hope it changes to be more like the touring. If it doesn't I'll "suffer" and live with it anyway

Back on topic. These two think size matters and both prefer the Cayman. Jay isn't a "always 911" guy so this is probably a unbias review

Easy Button.
Just buy a ticket to Atlanta or LA and do the experience. Choose the GT3/GT4 combo experience. I had already made my purchase (GT4) but wondered what the level up was like.
Drove them back to back over the exact same course and activities.
My impression after a fantastic experience in Atlanta....the GT4/Spyder is absolutely amazing and easily one of the best road cars ever produced.

The GT3 is f'ing cheat code.

That's a thread starter....
Reading between the lines you don't really question which is the better platform for you (718?), but that if you don't add the GT3 to your repertoire before your sports car endeavor ends, you may have regrets. Besides, if it doesn't work out, easily fixed.

I also prefer smaller sports cars... I've had a 981 GTS, an Evora GT, and now a 718 Spyder... (all manual)

The 991.2 911's aren't that much bigger than the 981 or 982 mid engine cars so I wouldn't worry too much about size.

You could get a 991.2 GT3 6MT or a 981 or 982 GT4 and probably be very happy either way.

Shorter gears in the GTS / GT4 would definitely close the gap...

Best of luck in whichever direction you decide to go!
this! I have both a Spyder and a GT3, the GT3 looks smaller than the 718 side-by-side!

Well, the interior of my 992 feels MUCH bigger than in my 718. And I don't mean when I look behind me, but the cockpit area seems way bigger in the 911. Partly I think it's because of the lack of buttons in the 992. It's mostly flat and open. And the cabin is about 2" wider.

I mean, I spent 45-50 min. in each so I don't know how much I can expand. There are several GT3/RS + 718 owners in here that know exactly what I mean I think.

For me...driving back to back. I started in the GT4....and there were a lot of "holy ****!!" exclamations with the cornering, braking, acceleration.

Getting right in the GT3 after that....it was looking at the instructor with a "oh my god"...at all of the above mentioned aspects. Followed by nonstop giggling after every corner, acceleration in the straight, and the braking demonstrations.

So "cheat code" is simply...it's not fair to other cars. It's the pinnacle of out of the box street/track cars.

Edit: I maybe should add that I was fortunate to get a GT4RS for my Leipzig track experience during my Euro Delivery....and it was definitely 1a. to the GT3 in terms of "oh my god" and giggles.

Yes, but this is on a track. Sure, if I was in a race for money, I would take a PDK GT3 over any 718 variant. The OP, however, said that he didn't drive on a track. And that, then, opened the door to all the following discussion about what would be the most enjoyable enthusiast road car. So......On a track where the results really count for something.....PDK GT3. But a sunny Sunday morning with 100 miles of twisty mountain roads ahead of me, I would take my manual Spyder any day.

However, if one just has to scratch an itch to own a GT3, then just get a GT3, of course.

This qualifies as a nice problem to have.
