Default First time Porsche buyer needing advice

Howdy. I have never owned a Porsche product before but I am in the market for a used 718 GT4. Since I am new to the brand and this car I am looking for any advice/things to watch out for that you have to offer.

I will spend the next couple days browsing this forum as I would imagine there is a wealth of information here.

I test drove a 2020 this week and immediately knew it was the car for me.I am looking for a manual in Guards Red with the buckets so my search will be nationwide. Is a PPI recommended for these cars and if so, any good sources for them? Should I hold out for a Porsche certified car or does that not really matter?

Since these are relatively new cars, I would argue that a full PPI is not necessary as you will still be in warranty especially if it is CPO. That being said, get a DME report to see if the car has been over-reved and check for the usual signs of abuse or damage like you would do with any other car (paint work, maintenance, unusual tire wear, misalignment, rattles, run a CarFax, etc.

Good to get a PPI, especially if you are buying it sight unseen. As for a source for it, once you find a car, try to get a recommendation from a local.

If I found the right car, I wouldn’t let the fact that it isn’t CPO deter me from buying it. It’s nice peace of mind, you’ll know it’s service is up to date, but if it isn’t CPO it should be less expensive and these cars don’t seem to have any major issues.

Welcome and good luck in your search.

Use the search icon drop-down. Make sure you select "advanced" -- otherwise it's crap.

Confine searches to Title -- simpler is better. Deselect All open forums and only select this one.

I use it all the time, it'll find what you need in a hurry. Doubt there is a topic not yet covered.

Personally, I'd go CPO -- but that's just me. You'll pay more because Porsche Dealer and it actually costs money to put it on a car -- but you'll get another couple years of warranty.

The older 2020 cars will be warranty timing out in the next 6-9 months.

What are everyone’s thoughts on buying from a Porsche dealer vs non-Porsche dealer?

Wait for my car to pop up at a Porsche dealer or it doesn’t really matter?

If you want CPO, it’ll have to be through a Porsche dealer, or private party selling a previously CPO’d car.

I guess a Porsche dealer BUT, I too waited for one of the right color to "pop" up. You will pay more. When I found mine, it was a basic AT ad with no picture from a Porsche dealer simply stating it was blue. A phone call made it shark blue. They were asking 140K with no CPO but being a 2022 it has warranty until 4/26. The best I could do was 137.5K but should've paid closer to 120-130ish. I had already "lost" two of these trying to get a better deal. I made them do a DME and they assured me the car would qualify for CPO but they hadn't gotten around to it because they'd just gotten it (I think all dealers say that). Offered it for 4K but I declined because you can get an extended warranty for around 5K that will be longer.

What are you going to use the car for?

special weekend car only? Plan to keep it for a long time?

If the answer is yes to those 2 questions, I wouldn't worry about getting it from a porsche dealer or not, but I would get a PPI done at a porsche dealership, if any issues come up and you still want the car you can get the warranty done work then.

if you driving it rarely and are keeping it a long time, you want to make sure it's in good condition but another 2 years of warranty isn't a big deal

on the other hand if you are using it almost as a daily, I would go CPO from a posche dealer but wouldn't worry about the PPI in that scenario initially but would get the PPI when the warranty is about to expire.

I believe many Porsche dealers won’t do a PPI as they don’t want any liability.

Another suggestion for the OP - post the car that is for sale here (perhaps best if you put down a refundable deposit first so someone doesn’t ****** it from you) and see if the seller happens to be on the forum, or someone knows the car, or someone local will go and look at it for you, etc.

I was able to contact the original owner of a car I am purchasing (they had traded it in), so it was nice to be able to chat with him about it before buying sight unseen.

I will also say while it’s nice to get a PPI, DME report, CPO, etc - the overwhelming majority of the time they come back without any major issues. Can you find a horror story here and there about a car not being what was advertised (and sometimes even after a PPI/CPO)? Of course. But the vast majority of cars are going to be fine, even if the owner took it to a couple of track days.

So if you find exactly what you are looking for at a good price, you may need to pull the trigger without all of the reassurances. Just depends on your risk tolerance.

I don’t bother with a ppi if it’s a CPO, otherwise find a local independent Porsche specialist for the PPI. My last used Porsche came from a bmw dealer and the PPI found a minor oil leak that was fixed under warranty.

I am considering this car, but for the asking price it seems like I might want to hold out for a car that is a year or two newer. Also not sure how I feel about how much it has moved around the country looking at the carfax.

I do not think the year matters as there are essentially no differences between a 2020-2023. And as time moves on, I do not think you'll be hurt buying a 2020 vs a 2021 or 2022.

These cars move around and trade hands. They are niche and not the most comfortable.

If you like it, try to negotiate the best deal possible and buy it.

I believe the Brake caliper design changed in 21 to a more rounder profile. That might be the only difference between the 718 editions.

Thats a nice spec... but its gotta be to your liking. I briefly scrolled through the listing and didnt see any post ownership upgrades such as Ceramic/PPF. That price isnt bad if the car has full PPF. Keep in mind that you can still negotiate. Pricing on 718 GT4's from any model year with low mileage, and similar build specs will all ask roughly the same dollar value (currently).

The buying advise provided above is solid.
I checked last night and there were only 5 GR on AutoTrader, so its not like you have a plethora of options. Pin down what specs are must haves, and wait till that particular car pops up, if not listed already.
