BMC air filters and self install
Hey Folks, I saw a youtube video where a guy said BMC air filters were transformative on his spyder's sound. Can folks comment on this? I have Soul Comp OAPs already, so I am wondering what it would do for me.
Anything problematic switching to these? Do they require (more) frequent servicing? They do look a bit smaller than OEM.
Also, are there any tricks to the install? Removing / replacing carpet always makes me nervous I'll be unable to get it back looking like it does from the factory. The video is pretty descriptive, actually, but doesn't talk much about this topic.
Any insights appreciated.
TIA

the hardest part of the install is:
- getting the ECU bolt hidden under the wiring harness off
- removing the oil filter hose
- pulling the filters out
but its readily DIY

Sounds like neither of you guys really recommend this at all? No advantage?

I said that on the 718 Spyder/GT4 group on FB and got viciously attacked, it was very weird. According to them it is the greatest thing since sliced bread and anyone who says otherwise is a ****.

its certainly not "transformative" in any way ... having said that the BMC filters are free-er flowing than the paper OEM

and yes, since they are "free flowing" I anticipate that they do indeed ingest more particulate matter than OEM ... but clearly Porsche do not consider that an issue, since they use BMC on RS models

I just installed these on my Spyder with CG valve controller, OAP and X-pipe racing but I did it together with CG sport headers so I can't differentiate 100% what comes from what. However, I was very skeptical about noticing any difference due to the BMC filters but I must say I am gratefully surprised. The sound of my car is just glorious in my opinion. The headers provided a rawness and extra volume that helps in the lower RPMs i.e. before you had to hit 6-7k rpm to hear the ending wail whilst now the wail comes earlier. The 7-8k rmp is just awesome. I must be drone tolerant because I don't even notice where it is. To the BMC point - There is actually a noticeable change in intake sound. I couldn't believe it as again I though after watching the mentioned Youtube video that it would be BS. But it is not. And I changed my stock filters less than 3 month ago so it can't be old dirty vs new clean. I doubt I could hear such a difference without the headers (or without the rest of the system perhaps) but with the full CG system, there is an actual difference in intake sound and I love it. At very low RPMs it is actually dominant over the exhaust noise. I have had this setup for just about 1 week with 4-5 drives only. I will comment again in a month's time or so.

Of course there will always be many different comments on any given subject here on Rennlist.
I'm not going to jump on the band-wagon and tell or suggest to you what to do.
However,
They are good enough that they come Stock in the 911 GT3.
Product Details BMC Performance intake Filters:
BETTER THAN OEM FILTERS
OEM paper filters present an elevated resistance to the passage of air and consequently a reduction in engine performance. Compared to a paper filter the BMC air filter permits a notably higher air flow passage, producing less than half the Pressure Drop (difference between the air pressure before and after the filter element) over the paper filters. This doesn't compromise the filter's engine protection efficiency: thanks to the combination of the different oiled layers, containment of all impurities is guaranteed as far as 7 microns, while paper filters generally require total filtration of particles as small as 10 microns. So BMC air filters let more air into the engine while still protecting it better than paper ones. In addition, a traditional paper filter must be replaced regularly during routine maintenance whilst the BMC air filter is reusable and has a general life-span equal to that of the vehicle.

I have the BMC Performance intake filters.
My "Opinion" is why not run them they sure are not going to hurt anything in regards to overall performance.
Lastly,
Do I honestly think you will feel ANY-Performance-Improvement in the Seat-of-the-Pants, No !!!
