Default Is the GTS 4.0 the GT3 Touring counterpart to the GT4?

The GT3 Touring has been the aspirational vehicle within the Porsche lineup for me since it's introduction. Given financial and availability realities, that isn't happening for now. I have a GTS 4.0 on order for April delivery, as I see it as a similar type of vehicle. Would it be wrong of me to describe the GTS 4.0 as the GT3 Touring equivalent of the GT4? I realize the GTS is not the equal of the Touring and is not a GT product, and that there is of course an actual 911 GTS slotted below the Touring, but the 4.0 seems to fit the ethos of the Touring more closely than anything Porsche makes in that it is a slightly detuned, de-winged version of the GT product upon which it is based, most importantly sharing the same engine, basically a GT car dialed down to 9 for the street.

I'd be interested in people's thoughts on this.

I'd go one step further and suggest that it no longer makes sense for Porsche to refer to the GTS 4.0 as a 718, and that a better name might be the GTS Touring or GT3 Touring.

Yes, it is wrong, there's no GT parts. GTS 4.0 would literally be 911 GTS. Touring is GT3 just no wing.

The GTS 4.0 has a lot of GT parts, not the least of which is the engine from the GT4 and the dual mass flywheel from the GT3.

I think the 911 touring label is not helpful. It leads one to believe that the car is softer (in a good way). They are not.

If the implication of a softer ride with the same engine suits you, then I can understand the point that the 718 GTS fits the touring “ethos”.

I find it more helpful to simply think of the touring as a wingless, stealthy 911 and think of the 718 GTS as a wonderful anomaly.

By the way, I’d buy a 718 GT4 Touring in a heartbeat.

Not really. Aside from the motor, it lacks the suspension, brakes, aero, which are a huge component of how the car drives and feels to drive. But a Cayman GTS 4.0 is not just a wingless GT4.

GTS's 911s and previous caymans are cars with a lot of options but nothing really functional or different for performance except more power. A GTS is basically an options heavy package and tweek of the lower car.

A GT3 takes a 911, throws a bunch of it away/reinvents the wheel and replaces it with it's own stuff that changes the function of the car. A touring tweeks a gt3.

A 718 GTS fits the 911/previous cayman GTS recipe very closely and doesn't fit the GT3 touring recipe at all except with a less powerful version of the same engine, which doesn't actually fit that recipe at all either because the touring didn't get handicapped in power.

Hello,

I find this thread very interesting and especially comments from Rennlist members that have driven both the GTS and the GT4.

I actually did consider going with the GTS but the GT4 just looked so killer our joint decision was the GT4.
No regrets but I'll simply say (Opinion) that I can easily see why a person would go for the GTS versus the Hard-Core GT4.

I say to people my 4.0 is a parts bin special with all the best components for ultimate rough mountain road driving and less track focus like the GT4.

Just drive what you like and puts a smile on your face.
It doesn't matter what's it called, or what the public perception is.

To the thread question: No. The touring is identical to the gt3 minus the wing. The gts is very very different from a chassis standpoint to the gt4. Different ethos. Touring is a wing delete. The spyder is much closer to the touring than the gts.

The 718 GTS 4,0 is a great Porsche and mildly affordable to Porsche standards. No need to aspire tot the touring moniker nor to stab the "718" as a lesser model.

Now that the GTS 4.0 has been out for a while and it has shown to be a wonderful car. I was just wondering about one more model for the the 718 line. I am curious if there would be any interest in a GT4 Touring model?? Porsche has pushed back the BEV Cayman/Boxster for another year and with the extra time on their hands maybe a different high performance model in addition to the Special Edition 4 cylinder models.

My thoughts of a GT4 Touring would be a wingless model GT4 but keeping the bigger GT4 ducktail spoiler and using the front end and splitter from the Spyder. Using the shorter gearing from the GT4RS along with the stock suspension and brakes from the GT4. This is just wishful thinking on my part I’m sure but I think it would be an interesting model that would sell very well. Just my opinion, what do you think?

So the car would be PDK only, yes?
