The 718 Spyder RS Discussion Thread

I'm saying what I want to say. Thanks for letting me know what I could have said instead. Will ponder that for the rest of the day.

This 991 stereo system weight comparo was linked in the 4RS forum:
https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...%2011.97%20lbs.
Base: 6.2 lbs.
Bose: 11.97 lbs.
Burm: 14.00 lbs
So in 991, Bose is 6 lb heavier and Burmester is 8lb heavier than Base. The diffs are likely even smaller for 718. This makes the 2 lb Burmester penalty (vs Bose) the best quality/weight deal in Porschedom. The 8lb penalty vs Base is also worth it, IMO. This (Burmester option) is another pro for BGTS over SRS in addition to auto-top, 6sp manual, heated 2way seats, and heated steering wheel when comparing 4.0 NA Porsche roadsters for the ultimate backroads carver.

I own a Boxster GTS 4.0 and I bought a second home near the canyons specifically to enjoy my cars. It has 2-way seats, Bose, and standard PASM Sport; but no amount of weight savings makes the car a Spyder of any kind. I also own a 2016 Boxster Spyder which absolutely destroys the Boxster GTS 4.0 in terms of agility and handling prowess. I configured the BGTS with PDK to avoid the long gearing and to help make the car more of a handling weapon (more on that below). I would say BGTS is between good and very good in terms of handling; but it’s not excellent. Anything Spyder is way sportier in the canyons. I fully expected the BGTS to exceed the capabilities of my 981 Spyder when I ordered it, but I was very surprised with the result. I like the car just fine — excellent car — but it’s not a Spyder of any kind.
I expect the 718 Spyder RS to be the best handling and most athletic open-top sports car ever produced by Porsche (to date) and one of the top 5 most agile open-top cars ever produced in the history of the automobile regardless of engine power output. I’m not talking Nurburgring time, although it should mirror Cayman GT4RS with maybe a 4-second penalty; I am talking hairpin turns and technical road stuff like US-129/Tail of the Dragon. (I actually prefer the Blue Ridge Parkway and some other less known roads to US-129.)
The other thing is transmission. I am blessed to own both. While it’s really great fun to enjoy a manual on these kinds of backroads, there’s quite a bit of cerebral power that needs to be dedicated to shifting (nonstop) while driving on these kinds of roads at the limit. It’s one very burdensome extra thing to do. Conversely, with PDK, it allows the driver to dedicate cerebral resources to other areas in order to maximize not only speed but fun and safety. The PDK in a car like a GT car is lots of fun and it is an ally, not a detriment, when driving the car to its capabilities. Note that I am speaking as someone who has had his 981 Spyder transmission re-geared gears 2-5: that’s how much I value the manual.
I wonder what the Speedster folks/owners will say about Spyder RS once they’ve driven/owned it. I think only the 992 Speedster could outdo it.

[QUOTE=hf1;19115291]On the contrary. Many love it. It's a great color, and as SRS launch color it will probably be one of the most ordered colors. Would look great with Neodyme or even blue wheels. Some great pics here:

Agreed, looks complex in direct sunlight.

I ordered Vanadium, too, if there is no new color before mid-March (freezing date), I think I'll stay with it. It looks really good in direct sunlight. It has a classic look that matches the Spyder, like my actual Spyder in GT Silver. In the case of a GT4RS, it will not work well; that's why I went with a bold color like shark blue in my 992 GT3.

I think he was saying colors that could be described as effeminate do not suit an RS car (for his taste).
For example there are some beautiful blue PTS colors out there like Meissen, Gulf, Olymp, etc. Maybe effeminate was the wrong word choice. These colors are "pretty," "elegant," and almost universally loved by women and enjoyed by many individuals on the male side. I understand what he was saying: for him, an RS car -- Boxster or otherwise -- needs to be painted in a "strong" color that projects a certain boldness; not in a color that's "pretty."
Not saying whether I agree or not -- I am just unpacking what he said. I don't think he singled out the RS version of Spyder or meant to distinguish it between a Boxster and a Spyder or Spyder RS -- he meant to distinguish any RS car from a non-RS car. Since we are discussing Spyder RS, he mentioned the "the badass character of Spyder RS."
Member after member in this thread have stated that an RS car needs to be looked at in a different way when choosing colors. I think this is mainstream thought, even if the word "effeminate" would not be commonly chosen in such a statement.
