Default PDK sport and water/oil temperature

My water temperature has been running at 221 and oil at 243 when running in normal PDK mode. Today when I selected sport, the water temperature dropped almost instantly to 194 and in a few minutes the oil dropped around 20 degrees. I thought it was a fluke so I shifted back and forth several times with cruise control on (so the engine stayed the same) and every time the temperature followed. Must be the PDK sport activates the additional radiator. Any other PDK owners experience this?

Yes, all the time. My water drops from 221 to 183 in seconds.

Doesn’t have to be in PDK Sport either. Believe it’s a demand cycle, expect same in manual.

I’ve been told it’s an electronic thermostat and not an additional radiator opening.

Yep have experienced that also when in normal mode. As soon as you push the engine, the temperature drops. In PDK sport it seems to stay at the lower temperature no matter how you're driving.

Car is dropping temp in anticipation of you beating on it.

Porsche calls it a Map controlled thermostat. It has a heating element in it.

Not sure if this is applicable, but in my Base 981 going to Sport mode opens the Oil Cooler.
Use it all the time to keep oil temp <= 220F. Coolant temp gauge stops at 194F ..so no idea what the actual coolant temps reside.

I pulled out the manual last night to see if it's mentioned but I couldn't find it in the likely sections. Wish I had known about this pre break-in as the PDK sport button appears to also be an on/off switch for the additional radiator. Can someone else with a PDK confirm?

I'm glad I saw this Thread going to stick around and watch for further up-dates.

It’s an electronic thermostat, not an additional radiator.

PDK Sport has no bearing on this.

Sport activates the lower temp. BMW does this too.

As other said it also can be activated by spirited driving.

Source? I would have thought the same but turning PDK sport on and off numerous times changed the temperature immediately every time without changing the engine speed.

I’ll have to check this out, normally if I’m PDK Sport then there is also aggressive driving so never associated one with the other.

With that being said in non PDK Sport aggressive driving does the same.

Perhaps this will help. The topic of temps and cooling system comes up regularly. Here is a thread from the 981 GT4 days. Post 10 contains a link to the 981 GT4 "SIT" document. There is discussion of the cooling circuit and the map controlled thermostat. I have not seen the 718 SIT but I expect the cooling circuit to be essentially the same. Good catch! I previously had seen this on both PDK Sport and normal when driving aggressively; but had never looked at temp gauge when selecting PDK Sport.

After reaching steady state of 221F, selecting PDK Sport lowers temp to 203-205F with no other changes -- obviously downshift to 6th.

Besides the lower steady state temp the e-stat seems like it is much more responsive to load changes and hold them longer.

Good stuff!

Awesome. Now we know. Makes me wonder if the auto blip or some other button does the same on the manuals.
