C40 Oil Discussion
#766
Sadly, oil analysis won't reveal much at the molecular level as to the underlying chemistry of the various oils. So you are unlikely to get anything useful from that exercise.
I just read through this thread about Mobil 1 C40 GT oil over on Bob Is the Oil guy, and while there's nothing but guesses there either, there is one unique bit of conjecture that I found interesting: that the new Mobil 1 C40 GT oil was necessary because the newer "regular" Mobil-1 X4 C40 oil is thinner than the older Mobil-1 X3 C40 oil. (Possibly a compromise that Mobil needed in order to get both A40 and C40 support in a single product?)
This was someone's comment: "It's almost like they are going to keep the GT cars on ESP X3 (with a slight improvement), and moved everything else to a lighter oil."
I'll keep checking back on that BITOG thread...it's currently 5-pages, but a lot of posts are unrelated to the Mobil 1 C40 GT oil.

The conjecture you mention makes sense, and is my suspicion as well. Time to head over to BITOG and monitor that thread too, haha.

Unless I missed it, what still remains to be answered would be:
1) For cars requiring A40, is any A40-approved oil still okay? They aren’t intending for us to utilize only the new ESP x4, correct?
2) For cars requiring C40, is any C40-approved oil still okay? They aren’t intending for us to utilize only the new ESP x4, correct?
(If I did miss these answers, kindly link me to the appropriate place for further reading.)

X3 is the old API SN while the X4 is the new SP, and it doesn't appear the C40GT carries any API rating. The SP is supposed to reduce occurance of low speed preignition, which is a problem with direct injection turbocharged engines. And even though the 9A2 4.0 isn't turbocharged, the rest of the engines in that family are and it probably wasn't worth formulating anything special just for the 4.0.
Perhaps the additive package required to get SP certification contains something that wasn't ideal for the GT engines? Don't they use titanium connecting rods?

Wouldn’t the additive package be a significant component for GPF treatment and LSPI deterrence?
Don’t oil analyses provide zinc and phosphorus (and other base metal) levels? Basic viscosity and flashpoint?
Wouldn’t knowing if these vary, or not, across the oils be useful?

What do you expect has changed between A40, C40 x3, C40-GT, and C40 x4?

We are just saying that additive package isn't the whole story. A VOA won't tell us about shear stability or give us the HTHS. I still plan to do VOAs before putting either x4 or GT in my car.

When I did VOAs for A40 and C40 (x3) I found a very significant difference in additive package. Happy to dig them up if you or anyone else is interested.

PSA with NO interest or intent to prolong good/best/worst oil discussion but Autozone has Mobil 1 ESP x4 on sale for ~$40 for 5 quarts including STP oil filter (part of the package deal). Deal runs through end of month.

Where was it established that various other branded engine oils previously carrying C40 approval (for example Motul, Liqui Moly) are no longer Porsche approved (for cars currently requiring C40)?

Is the NHTSA pdf up to date? I saw something about Motul 8100 Xclean gen2 losing C40 status because they had trouble sourcing an additive but not sure if they worked that out. I wanted to use Motul again after liking the Xcess 5w40 on my 996 Turbo. I don't want to worry about my engine warranty and need to do an oil service. This lists 8100 Xclean gen2 as acceptable as of June 30, 2024. I also could be into using Liqui Moly 5W40 Top Tec 4110 Engine Oil otherwise. What else are people running? If the green label Mobil 1 is close to as bad as the old black label European Car Formula that Porsche used to recommend in their cars I have not very much interest in running more green label.

This, from the owners manuals.
IIRC others have posted the same ‘break’ between ‘21 and ‘22 regardless of engine.
