TheStraightPipes Spyder Review

So drive a 911 if that is your preference. I loved mine. Just decided that a naturally aspirated mid-engine stick GT car was something that I needed to experience and don’t regret it. My 911 was significantly faster in a straight line but I’m enjoying the GT4 experience. Something about the car’s proportions just feels right and looks better to my eye. It’s not for everyone but that’s why there are choices out there.

I have to say I think the gearing thing is absurd too. I have not even gone over 5K RPMs yet and the car still pulls hard in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gear so long as you're not bogging down the motor. The power builds and cannot wait to continue to open it up past 5k.

They should have a GT4 review up soon too, but first up is the Spyder:

Yelling, the gearing "sucks and ruins the experience". Sounds like a 3rd grader whining about his tike.
To the dork driving: his imitating Shmee ruins the experience
Seriously, these asshats should go parrot some more social media drivel and enjoy shifting on their Play Stations.
PDK might ruin the experience. But a perfect manual gearbox, even with slightly long gearing, is about as close as you can get to driving nirvana nowadays.
And I'ver hit 8000 RPM in 3rd and 4th gear on a wide open road. It's called *****.

Fun fact: a 2020 MX-5 Miata hits 102 km/h in second gear (at 7500 RPM), and 149 km/h in third gear. Prior to this year, the highest speed limit in Ontario (where I and TheStraightPipes are based in) was 100 km/h on 400 series divided highways. If one were to only drive on the street and follow posted speed limits by the book, one could not hit redline in second gear on a Miata on any road in Ontario prior to this year. Posted speed limits for Ontario country roads is 80 km/h, so one can't even get close to redline in second gear of a Miata. By these reviewers' logic, the Miata would be a two gear car.
Bonus fact: if a Miata were modified to rev to 8000 RPM, it would hit 159 km/h (99 mph) in third gear. Miatas are geared way too long - third gear is useless on the street, and it completely ruins the experience of driving a Miata

Lol. I like to think of it at rightful indignation aimed at an ameteurish and frankly insipid review that begins with "Long Gearing RUINS the experience". How many times has the gearing been mentioned already. Also I like YouTube, I'd prefer not to see it it turn into an internet trash heap with stuff like this. YMMV.

I subscribe to The Straight Pipes. My personal take is they get more tolerable as you get to know them, so to speak. Their channel is absolutely designed for a younger audience and monetization. When they got heavy in talking about sponsors, I stopped watching until they stopped doing that. And I only watch for cars I'm genuinely interested in.
This Spyder video though... I think I made it 3 minutes. When the rant starts on gearing and he decides to drive around in 2nd, I stopped. For exactly the reason that's been identified. They have no problem with high top speed of the GT3 in 2nd, so it was clearly hyperbole.
There are some true reviewers out there. These guys aren't them. This is entertainment. And I wasn't entertained.

I did change the gearing in my car tho, so maybe I been watching too many reviews LOLOL

Really? You changed the gearing on your new GT4/Spyder? Good for you. Afaic, Gears, while certainly much more costly to change than say camber and toe are highly personal and track dependent. How do you like the new ratios?

Admittedly, i caN be a little emphatic from time to time. While I considered changing gears on my 981 Spyder as the midrange response curve of that engine really exacerbated the long gearing, so far with the 4.0, i haven’t felt that need.

I have a ND2 with the higher redline than the ND1. Gearing is fine.
This long gearing business is a bit overblown IMO. The reviewer has to pick on something in an otherwise outstanding package. Kind of like saying the mole on Cindy Crawford’s face is a little bit too big, and the mole on Kate Upton’s face is too small....You are zooming in one detail while ignoring the rest of the package.

An amusing update and response to their rather lukewarm review.
While watching an RX-8 review today and they were doing the “box test” on that car...

I do miss me a rotary engine. My first 2-seat sports car was a 85' RX-7 GSL-SE with the 13B rotary motor. It drank oil and I had plenty of issues with it, but it was still fun back then.
