Default GTS 4.0 - tune away from GT4 power/redline?

Per the title, I’ve read that all the hardware is the same between the two engines. Any reason to not assume the aftermarket can bring the GTS up the the same power and redline?

So you think you'll be equivalent on power alone and thereby save $s? You really think its that easy?

That’s my question.

Again, I’ve read that the hardware is exactly the same - engine, exhaust, etc. Porsche presumably did this to save on cost, since this engine is currently being used on only these two cars. And to differentiate the GT4. If so it would make sense that a ecu mod could take you to the same levels.

Porsche has done this many times in the past, Boxster S, Cayman S, Cayman R. Engine hardware was all the same.

Not sure why you mention $$, there are many other reasons to prefer one over the other.

Its not so much the engine as it is the suspension and ground effects. 20 hp isnt going to be noticeable, its the other bits

First, I probably would want to understand the source of “all the hardware is the same” claim. Has anyone been able to confirm part numbers? There could be subtle differences (in addition to ECU tune) that makes the GTS to have a more responsive torque curve In the slightly lower rpm range.

Of course, different part numbers is only one indication. The physical properties could still be the same.

so, I don’t know and I can only speculate.

What I’ve read a couple different places ... this from a Motortrend article on the GTS:

“In the Cayman GT4 the engine makes 20 hp more, while the torque output is unchanged. The extra power is all in the engine management system mapping.”

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.mot...rst-drive/amp/

Agree no one will will probably be able to verify until getting down to part number detail, was just wondering if some tuners, in perhaps Europe that have seen both versions of the car, would have a view.

Yes I know there are many other differences between the two cars, just wondering about the engine.

My mechanic has confirmed that the engine difference is the software.

Sure, but if you are going to tune, delete the fake particulate filters and do a real tune. Also, goodbye warranty risk ....

Do you happen to know how your mechanic confirmed this? Curious to learn more.

This was clarified at a recent Porsche training session.

I’m sure a good tuner can squeeze out some power and get you pretty close

It's the same engine, transmission, and exhaust for all 718 4.0 cars. Using "cheaper" internals in a different engine to lower max HP by 20hp would cost them MUCH more than just copy/pasting the same engine in all 718 4.0 cars and slightly "choking" the "lesser" GTS via software, even if that. For all we know the HP diff could be just a marketing gimmick and there may not even be a diff in the software. There was a video recently posted here where a GTS 4.0 out-pulled a GT4 in a drag race. Too lazy to search the link.

Engine could be made similar.
Suspension, brakes and aero are totally different.
One is a real GT car. The other, not so much.

Probably. Just like the 981 S vs GTS or 991.2 GT3 vs GT3rs. 15-20hp is just software tuning.....
