Default Porsche Four-Cylinder Engines: From the 356 to the 718

In celebrating the new four-cyl turbos in the 718 Boxster and Boxster S, it’s good to remember that Porsche has a long and storied history with four-cylinder engines.

"Now, the 718s are reviving Porsche’s once strong four-cylinder history, albeit in turbo form. And with the Boxster and Boxster S both getting a healthy HP bump over their naturally aspirated counterparts, it’s hard not to be excited about Porshe’s [sic] four-cylinder future."

I'm actually not that excited. Thrilled to have my NA six. Here is Porsche marketing in action. And yeah, they even misspelled "Porsche" in the write up!

Never thought losing 2 cilinders, losing cubic inches and adding a turbo would lead to a "celebration".

The article is meaningless, because they didn't actually drive it. It amounts to a (doubtless all-expenses-paid) puff piece.

I've read two 718 reviews so far and the 718 is quite impressive. Motor trend and car and driver both give healthy accolades on the latest 718 and 718s....(and I would imagine aftermarket tuning could be expansive with the turbos)

I recently drove a boxster s with 315 hp and was impressed.

The new 718 sounds even better if that's even possible.

The base 718 has more power and acceleration than the previous bolster S...

The only down side is that with the turbo 4 engine Porsche has raised the price by around 5 grand.

I'm not thrilled with marketplace pricing on the Porsche product...

It's a wonderful car but the competition from a performance perspective is hard to ignore.

Still we can admire the launch of the wonderful 718.

As I read elsewhere I'm just happy they didn't borrow an engine from a VW GTI and stick it behind the seats of the Boxster in order to make both their cafe numbers and keep costs down.

+1.
Useless. They sat in the passenger seat and got taken for a drive.

Porsche does those pre-release drive along fluff articles so often and so well, that you'd swear they had some writers on their payroll. At a minimum, they appear to have a short list of lackeys that'll write a favorable passenger seat article for them at will. Honestly, an automotive journalist shouldn't draw any conclusions about a car until they've actually driven it themselves.

Truth in all of this is no one knows how the new engines will drive.

I haven't read any of the articles and pay any attention to the positive articles and naysayers, which IS always what happens with a major change in most dedicated car enthusiast communitiesn, but I imagine that the new four cylinder engines is a step in the right direction. Otherwise Porsche would not have gone through all the trouble they did.

Coming to my own conclusion it will be a better car due to the engine. Being a Turbo the Torque will come on nice and hard at a lower RPM than the current car. Their will be more BHP because of the turbos as well and a simple ECU remapping can produce more power. Also, again, because of the turbos people can put larger turbos and other qualified aftermarket go fast gadgets that go well with turbos will again up the game.

Again I don't know which way this new car will go but with Porsche and it's enthusiasts the cars are released, people get use to them and their higher profile in performance and that will be it. Everyone will shut up about the situation because they realize the new car is better.

+2. With buyers of the 718 getting inferior sound, 2 fewer cylinders and a $5K hike in base price, they will get taken for a ride. Literally.

I'll reserve judgement until I drive it. But if it sounds terrible, that will be really hard, near impossible to ignore.

Sounds terrible. I'm not a fan. The good ol N/A days are over. I'm planning to keep my GT4 forever.
