I'm no dude...I'm just a performance enthusiast. The hp on the base car I believe is 350 hp compared to the 2015 boxster s hp rating of 315.

Both wonderful sports cars ...yet let's remember the base booster is moving to 350 hp which is 35 hp more than the boxster s model with 6 cylinders.

This doesn't detract from the fine six cylinder cars but this does offer more hp.

I don't have a dog in this fight yet I'm open enough to acknowledge Porsche seems to have created an even more impressive sports car.

I'm not thrilled with the higher base price...or the cost of options Porsche charges....

Still I admire the brand.

Btw...I'm on my third new corvette and I've never owned a Porsche..

I've thought about but haven't pulled the trigger to date.

Also, again, because of the turbos people can put larger turbos and other qualified aftermarket go fast gadgets that go well with turbos will again up the game.
So it's all about straight line acceleration when going flat-out from 2K rpm to rev limiter for you? Who cares about engine character, throttle response (let's fit some bigger turbo's, that will help ... ) and precision?

Sounds to me that you are more in the market for a Dodge Hellcat than a Porsche Boxster.

It isn't.

Porsche did this because they had to. CO2 emission laws require them to continually release cars with lower CO2 production, and (because of the ridiculous way those emissions are measured) small capacity turbo engines are the only solution to get decent numbers down.

Porsche, with rare exceptions (some would argue the 993 to 996 transition being a prime example) makes each iteration "better" for pretty much every model they produce.
My guess is I will keep my '16 BGTS "longer than usual" in this case.

Can one assume the weight will drop also, losing two cylinders?

No, it went up. Turbo components aren't exactly light.

Finally the old school VW beetle crowd found an adequate replacement for the lame type 1 and type 4 engine. Even better, they don't have to stuff a Subaru engine in there anymore either.

The base 718 makes 300hp the 718 S makes 350. Noticeable in the base perhaps, less so in the S I would think. Here is some other food for thought.
Power to weight...it's 56lbs to 78lbs heavier too.

718 Boxster (manual) = 2,944 lbs.
981 Boxster (manual) = 2,888 lbs.

718 Boxster S (manual) = 2,988 lbs.
981 Boxster S (manual) = 2,910 lbs.

It will end up being faster and performing better than the outgoing 6cyl. The question will be driving experience and track reliability.

No, Subaru's header design is what gives them that distinctive sound. Which I agree with you on, not a fan.

Comical that some people think Porsche made this transition to turbo by choice, in order to improve the car, rather than at the end of the regulators' gun barrel...

Exactly.... If the regulations weren't in place, Porsche would have never considered the 4 cylinder/turbos. Thus why I'm not a thrilled about the idea. It was a compromise, nothing more.

Let's get real... They'll sell more than ever and probably set sales records in China with spoiled 16 year olds and housewives. That's really all that actually matters.

90% of buyers have no clue. They buy magazine stats and the badge. They lease the thing and then throw it away. It's true for every marque, not just Porsche.

Soon everything will be autonomous and electric anyway. Self driving rolling living rooms on an eternal "payment plan" like a smartphone.

It's all "fine" as long as 90% of people keep forking over money (they will).

The car mags will do their part and make it all sound very "exciting" so that the 90% keeps buying the mags. And to that 90% there will be *no question* that the 718 is "better in every way". After all, it will be quicker 0-60.

It won't be long before the GT cars are all autonomous too. Argue over whose GT is "faster" over drinks from the comfort of the clubhouse while the digitally controlled electric speed pods "race" each other

For the rest of us? Keep the old ones healthy
