Default Long running COBB STAGE1 93 consequencies

Dear Felllows, i Have a 718T BOXTER with a a COBB ACCESSPORT Stage1 93, and I'm driving every day my car.
Some Porsche fans told me that sooner or later I will get Problems with de gearbox or engine, because I should only have the stage1 93 running on the ECU for days off track nor every other day, like i do.
Can you fellows give me an advice about the right way to proceed please ?

Kind Regards , Paulo C

Hi Paulo,

A Stage 1 tune on a daily driver is no big deal. Do "tunes" put more stress on the engine? Absolutely, anytime you are asking the engine to work "harder" than it was designed, you're adding more stress to the engine. Is a Stage 1 tune something to lose sleep over? Nope, as it is generally a "mild" tune where you are only asking the car to do what the engineers wanted to do, but were held back for safety/reliability/insurance/lawyers/etc. reasons.

Just enjoy your car!

I think the Cobb people will chime in with the usual, but yes you are “potentially” asking more out of your car with a tune, but not necessarily. Are you driving at 10/10 everywhere you go? Well yes maybe you will have premature wear on the vehicle, but in reality you will drive it normally most of the time and use that extra HP every once in a while. In this case, if you keep up the service and do all the maintenance, I don’t think you have anything to worry about. Don’t forget that the 3.0 that this engine is based on is pushing out 480hp with twin turbos. I realize it’s a little apples to oranges but 450-460hp isn’t asking that much more. I would be more concerned with fuel/air mix and making sure the car is not being starved or too much fuel.

I also know, just from watching what manufacturers do, they leave room for more HP down the road. So they leave extra on the table so in three years, they can bump up the HP a little more without having to completely reengineer the vehicle to say they did some or because their competitors raised their output levels and they want to keep up.

I don't know who these people are that are telling you this and what their information is based off of but in my personal experience, that is a load of crap. I've owned and driven stage 1 and stage 2+ tuned turbo cars for most of my driving life. Most of these cars were daily driven. As mentioned above, if you are pushing the car 10/10ths 100% of the time, then sure, of course it will place extra strain on the drivetrain. But no one does that unless it's a track car. We are driving them barely a fraction of what they are capable of 95% of the times. Don't worry about it. A lot of people like to pass on out dated old wives' tales.

I've had APR on my GTI, Madness on my Abarth, custom tuning on my Mustang 5.0 with almost everything done short of a supercharger, Dinan on my BMW 135is etc etc. Never had an issue up to and over 100k miles.

My B5 S4 was tuned at 1k miles, went stage 3 at 195K miles, now has 330k miles and internals / heads never touched. Still runs great, although I don't drive it much any more.

You forgot to also blame the HR manager, front desk receptionist, UPS delivery guy, Fauci, Ralph Nader, the Fed Reserve chairman, and the Wuhan lab’s cafeteria busboy.
