Did you consider an older 911 prior to buying a newer 718?

Yes....
718 feels smaller and more tossable. More toy like. Maybe the rear tires on this GTS is only 265 vs 305 in the 991. 991 feels much more planted and just rips out of turns. Quite a bit more power as well.

I've had four 911s previously. The 718 GT4 has easily been the most enjoyable of the bunch and it didn't cost any more than a modestly configured 992 I considered for a bit.
I also thought about going to a Turbo S for the monster power. Then I looked into the idea of a used GT3. But the GT4's mix of handling, power, lightness, and general drivability I had been reading about in the reviews called to me too loudly. I'm very happy with the decision.

i had bought a pre owned 997.1 TT. souped it up and have been using it ever since. Then came the lure of a manual CAYMAN GT4 and i took the plunge for two reasons.. NA 4 litre mid engine layout and the THREE pedal set up. it is a blast to drive the GT4. having said that the 997.1 TT AWD steering feel is truly sensational. I know exactly what is going on while driving hard on twisties/track. modern electronic steering in P cars are very good, but the old hydraulic steering is leagues ahead. Having said that, i love both cars for their different setup and their related strength's.

I considered an older 911, but you have to go pretty far back before they’re significantly lighter than a gt4. The gt4 is a ton of fun, and has all the modern conveniences (and warranty coverage). I may yet go for a classic 911 eventually, but I’ve really enjoyed my mid engined 4.0L detour.

I thought the 987’s were the perfect size. The 718’s pushed the boundaries of the size of a car for me. So the 991.1+ 911’s are definitely too large for a car. IMHO.

I saw a 991.2 with more miles and not quite as pristine as my 718 CS, but after watching the DK Initial D style battle video on YouTube where they tested the 911 991.2 3.0T vs the 718 Cayman S, I was sold on the Cayman S.
Couldn't find the video unfortunately

Race Car
In the past three years, I had a 991.2 C2 and a 992 C2S, both new and configured by me. The 991.2 was not as fast as the 992, but it was a narrow body and really the better of the two in many ways. It seemed to have better throttle response and less turbo lag, and it felt more like a sports car in handling. There were just a few things I left off the 991.2 build that I wanted and so I decided to trade for the 992, and it was a disappointment for me. (I have a build coming up for a 992 Targa C4S, and may decide to add it for road trips - at the moment, I can’t see selling my BGTS 4.0).
Anyway, I have not driven a GT4 or Cayman GTS 4.0, but if I did want another hard top, I’d need to look at a 991.2 GTS or C2S. Both are narrow body and they have the analog instrumentation and tactile controls that I like, but the 718 has basically the same interior. It would be a hard decision of the 4.0 vs. the turbo 3.0 in the 911 for me. Good luck!

A different story. At 66 , I am new to Porsche. I have had BMW's M's and American muscle cars all my life.
I currently have a new 718 Base and a C8 Corvette. We went to a Porsche performance driving 2 years ago in Leeds Alabama part of the experience we took different cars out to the skid pad. With the traction control off I just hated the 911. The high polar moment of inertia in the rear made the stability unmanageable. It was like driving on the hairy edge. I loved the 718 on the track and on the skid pad. Thus I bought one.
The Corvette is point and shoot with the automatic transmission , it handles a little bit dull but with clear confidence on the track. There is a used manual 2020 Porsche 911 S locally that I could trade up to with my Vette so I would gain a manual tranny back....but the 911 handling ugh ! Maybe I'll try an Aston Martin ?
Any way the 718 is my new favorite and I just love the sound of the flat four. It pops an burbles between shifts with a deep howl on acceleration. The car handles impeccably

I’ve been searching high and low for any 911 with the spec I want but manual is a requirement. I came across a new boxster base manual in gentian blue that I don’t think I can pass up!

I have almost the same story. Had a ‘16 spyder. Traded it for a low mileage 911 targa gts. Nice car but had to get back into the spyder so just got back into a 21. The car is special.
