Default Did you consider an older 911 prior to buying a newer 718?

Hello Fellas,

Happy Super Bowl Sunday (go Bengals!! rooting for Cincy but think the Rams will win).

Anyway, I wanted to ask the community to see if any of you considered an older 911 (4 to 5 years old) over the 718. If you did, what made you pick the 718? Was it the size, looks, driving dynamics, lower cost of maintenance/repairs (I assume the cayman is a little bit easier on the wallet than a 911)?

Curious to what everyone has to say.

Thanks!

I had a 2019 Targa GTS that I sold and bought a Spyder - took a buddies' car for a ride and that it all I needed to decide. And I never considered any older ones.

Go Rams!

I considered it.

I just (last week) got my 718 after starting the hunt in earnest about a year ago. So basically one of the worst possible times!

Everything I read suggested that the 718 was the kind of Porsche I was looking for (size, driving dynamics, mid engine, NA). Once I was able to get an allocation for a new Cayman then it just seemed like for the money (as used car prices were going up), having a new car was a lot more attractive then a 4 or 5 year old, out of warranty car.

If the used car market had not gone to crazy I might have ended up with a used 911 or maybe a GT4. But I am loving the C GTS4!

I owned a 987.2 Boxster, 718 Cayman Base, and drove 981 GT4 and 718 GTS. I drove a 991.1 911 GTS with a great spec, and it didn’t feel right. Maybe I drove the wrong 911, but the dynamics of the Cayman just feel right.

I purchased a 2017 four years ago. It was a year old and exceptional value. I was looking for pre-owned 911 at the time and discovered a mint 718 on my dealers lot.
They just took it on a trade and sold it to me in 24 hours. The car never officially was listed by Porsche dealer. It was a different world 4 years ago it was almost like they were glad they moved the 718 so quickly. My 911 dream was put on hold.

Ok four years later, I have 911 on order due to arrive in May. Will be keeping the 718. At the end of the day always wanted 911 and now decided to go for it.
The inflated asset values of the stock market made decision easier this time around. In the end my itch for the 911 did not go away with 718.

Before ordering a CGTS 4.0 (V200 currently, due to be completed early May!), I test drove both a 991.1 and 991.2 Carrera. 991.1 base felt quite similar in performance to my old 987.2 CS, and the 991.2 with its PDK and forced induction just somehow didn't feel special enough. Can't say I would be unhappy with either though! However, I've been very excited by the GTS 4.0 ever since it was introduced - these kind of cars (mid engined, NA, manual gearbox) will not be around forever, and I thought I should make use of the fact that I'm fortunate enough to be able get a new one, configured to my own specs.

Now, if I had space and money to have more than two cars, I would seriously consider getting a 911, but it would most likely be a 964/993.

I considered 991.2s and newer 991.1s. Needing a manual it was impossible to find one speced the way I liked or even close. Almost all for sale were plastic interiors and dark exterior colors. Then something like 90% of them were PDK. Also only considered CPO's or private sales as I have no interest in buying a 6 figure car from a shady 'high end' dealership, nor do I trust buying a car like that from a hyundai dealership,

No, the dynamics of the 718 platform, with the NA flat six, and the PDK all cinched the deal.

Thanks for the response, I agree with the CPO and not buying from high end dealers or dealerships of other manufacturers...too risky for me.

Wow, that is quite a "downgrade" to a better car. Thanks for posting. I have a BGTS new on order, hopefully get it in June. This makes me feel confident that I have a good car coming.
I almost bought a 911 base because I was told the 718 4.0 is rare and hard to get an allocation. But then a cancellation fell into my lap and I jumped on the Boxter.
The high used car prices are in stark contrast to the tiny increase MSRP has seen in the last 12 months, so it feels like a good deal to spend $100,000 2020 dollars in 2022.
If it were 2019, I might look for a 2015 911, but am happy with my order right now. I am going to keep my 2002 986. That value has only one direction, up.

The way I specced my incoming 718, I could have bought a new 911. But, I wanted a manual, NA engine from a tossable car.

I have owned 997s in the past and I like them but they are a bit dated at this point. Subsequent generations have become more GT cars and are just too big and heavy. The only way to get a NA 911 these days is a GT car that you can't even buy and if you could, the markups are crazy so I can't afford one anyway.

My plan was always a Boxster until they released another Spyder. Once I saw the new Spyder I knew that was the vehicle I needed. Had my Spyder for 2 months now and loving every second in it. The only 911's I would consider would have to be another GT car now that I have 1.

I looked at several, but did not drive one. Then I drove a Cayman GTS and then a Boxster S, then happily found the Boxster GTS I have now.

I did not see any point in rear seats, and find the styling of the Boxster (and Cayman) to be nicer. And that electric razor shifter thing? Meh!

Sure I'd love a 911 Turbo Cab, who wouldn't, but for what I was looking for the Boxster checks all the boxes.

Now lets get back to the calendar, is it April yet?

Mike
