Looking for some help here. Car is a 2021 Spyder with Light Design Package.

I don’t have the tangle of wires shown above. The wire dangling is hot for the overhead lights.

Not many choices, but for those that have similar what did you tap?

Here’s some pics. I used a flexible card and pushed hard to drop.

Note the break in molding toward windshield— perfect for running cord.

I ended up ordering this hardtap kit with an RJ11 connector for my Uniden R3. Ordered Wednesday and it arrived on Friday. Going to go this route and along the A pillar instead of the mirror tap

I ordered slightly different parts off amazon and didn't use the blendmount, but followed his steps for the mirror tap. Worked really well, very clean finished look.

Did you figure it out? My Blendmount and tap arrive tomorrow. Thanks.

There is no switched power; it’s all live. Do you have a volt meter? — some are less than 12.

Think in the end went with the black/red and brown, but double check

On a 997 911, I used one of these:

https://www.escortradar.com/collecti...ts/direct_wire

Soldered on an Add-a-Fuse and plugged into a switched on 12volt source in the driver's fuse panel. Also added an eyelet for the ground and fastened it under a nut near the same fuse panel.

I had a costly mistake trying to tap into switched on power by the map lights on a Cayenne.

All these electronics can be so sensitive.

I like to avoid probing wires for power.

I have a 21 Spyder with dimming mirrors. In the photo above, I have another blue plug on the right side, inside the empty clip in the picture above. I grabbed the black to black for ground and the blue wire was a switched power. Easy peasy. I'm not sure why the plug isn't used in this vehicle.

I don’t understand why you guys just don’t run a wire to the fuse box. It’s so easy. The only thing you need to remove is one visor. You’ll have the detector on its own fuse that gets power when you start the car and cuts power when you shut the car off. You don’t have to cut or splice any wires. I’ve done this on my current three cars and I did it on my 981 and 4 prior cars. Works great and extremely easy.

Is the wire to the fuse panel exposed, or is it tucked all the way to the panel? Any pictures you can share of the wire routing and the panel setup?

I didn't take photos while I was installing it, but here are "after" photos.

I removed the right visor. It is really easy to remove. Removing it allowed me to fish the wire from the mirror to the side of the car, below the windshield surround covering. (Since my detector has the plug on the right side I tapped into the right fuse box, but you can go to either and the process is the same). Then, I just placed the wire under the weather seal along the edge of the A-pillar (red line in photo). If you just lift up the edge of the weather seal with your finger you'll see the edge of the A-pillar cover. You can just push the wire under the edge of that.

When you get to the bottom of the dash, the wire just goes to the fuse box. I removed the kick panel (circled in red) that covers the fuse box. You don't have to remove that, but it comes off easily (just clipped in) and it makes it easier. I used a fuse "piggy back" like this:
Amazon Amazon

Directly above the fuse box is a suitable ground. This shot is looking up from the fuse box and shows how I grounded it (black wire is the ground).

It's a really clean installation, and the detector is on it's own circuit, protected with its own fuse, and didn't require any cutting or tapping into any existing wires. I removed the "clamshell" that is around the mirror stalk so I could get the wire into it. I filed a small grove into it to hold the wire. Removing the clamshell was the hardest part. You just need to pull it apart (I found that calling it names helped). The wire that you see in this last shot is the only exposed wire. Hope this helps.

Excellent info. I’ll be doing such exploring soon. V1 and dash cam. Trying to figure out a way for rear dash cam on Boxster. Hopefully getting mine this month. LOL.

TxShaggy, I also have a 21 Spyder with the dimming mirrors. In your pictures I see the blue plug that looks to be untouched, but I don't see a blue wire. I see purple wires in both the blue plug and the plug that is disconnected. Thanks.

Thanks for this. I did exactly this with a hardwire kit from vantrue. I put the add-a fuse into D3 on the passenger side, which should be switched on my 981, and grounded it but I'm not getting power to the dashcam. The dashcam is good, plugs into the cig lighter fine. I can't tell if something isn't right with D3 (also tried D2 and 4 for kicks) and changed the ground to a different bolt. Any suggestions would be welcome.

FYI, the uniden R3 automatically powers off after about 10 minutes. I believe that's a setting option. Mine is tapped into the constant power in the rear view mirror.

Where is the OBD port on our cars? I haven't come across it yet.
