Default GTS speaker mounts being produced!!

to follow up on my wanted post:

here is what i have done. ive tracked down an old friend who owns a machine shop. i contracted him to make the gts speaker mounts for me. is is ordering some glass reinforced resin i think he called it to get as close to the material on the gts as possible. he will make me 2 of them and i will fit them and make sure they are porsche quality. After the successful test fit, i will email pics etc and whomever might be interested in them can email me. I gave him a comprimised mount to work off of so if anyone wants to donate an unmolested gts speaker mount for reproduction, it would be appreciated.

Could you be more specific in what you are describing? Do you mean the speaker that mounts lower in the door panel and fits a 6.5" speaker like in certain heavily optioned GTS's?

...Many of us will surely appreciate a mount for the big rear speakers behind the front seats (on 10 speaker cars)

I think this is for the 6.5" big speaker next to the rear seats. On a GTS these are round but the back is profiled to fit the bulges in the car - they often get damaged if these speakers are changed... Assume you could upgrade to them from the earler square with rounded corner design as well...

Default update on grills

yes, these are the same ones you guys are talking about. Its a no go with my machineshop guy. he says he cant do it for some reason and the materials are outrageously expensive. i do have an apptment to talk to a friend of his who is a plastic molding shop. I will keep you guys updated.

this might be a tough one. You might have to make thousands to make the cost reasonable.

If you are going to have these mounts made from scratch you will have a market. I would suggest that you have them made with 1/4" to 3/8" extra height so that deeper-than-stock speakers can be used.

I agree with Dave,

Or at least have your buddy offer spacers. I have a good mount if you need it. PM me and tell me where to send it.

Default Possible alternative- I got my speakers re-foamed

I don't know if the GTS woofer surround is different from the '89-91 surround, maybe someone can reply. If they're different, at least I think i've found a resource for GT owners. Perhaps I'll post this in the other thread, as discussed below.

My rear woofer surrounds were completely gone, and I had seen the thread on 'looking for '89+ rear woofers' where no one has the original surrounds. I looked around and found a place in FL called Simply speakers and sent them the Blaupunkt speakers (They're 2 ohms ?!?!?!) to see whether they could refoam them. Well, they can. I got the pair back today. Dunno how they sound 'cause I haven't installed them but they look pretty good.

Cost was $30 per side + shipping = $75

So- for those who don't mind staying stock, refoaming might be an option. They may re-cone as well, I didn't ask about that.

Their website ishttp://www.simplyspeakers.com/

DISCLAIMER: Not affiliated in any way, I'm just a happy customer, at least till I plug 'em back in!

Here's the before and after.

All the 10-speaker cars have the same surround for the 6" drivers.

Don't overlook the refoaming option. One of mine was in the shape pictured above. For around $35. worth of parts, it was a fairly straightforward afternoon project. It makes sense to do both of them. When reinstalled, both look perfect and sound much better.

One of my GTS's rear 6.5" speaker grilles split at the edge a few weeks ago - superglue and JB weld just couldn't hold it and every time it let go again it would buzz anoyingly. I have aftermarket a/d/s/ 6.5" units in there which normally sound great and the original grilles & rings (butchered to fit).

I purchased some 6.5" a/d/s/ grilles for these but of course they did not fit the spacer rings well - they were about 2-3mm smaller diameter. I considered this for a while and last weekend I removed one of the old spacer rings - patched up some of the damaged areas with JB weld - 2 of the mounting tabs were snapped off. I then covered the spacer rings with a stretch vinyl cover to approximatly match the vinyl in the car (you could do thin leather as well (or I'm sure Paul Champagne could do it for you).

I used contact adhesive on the face, sides & rear of the rings step by step and stretched the vinyl tight then wraped over the sides - no seams - then wrapped underneath. Stretched tight the vinyl hides the locking ridges around the edges for the stock rings. It would be possible to fill these ridges with JB weld and sand smooth also.

Mounting the a/d/s/ grilles on top of this worked well and looks very good. I was able to redrill the mouting holes through the a/d/s/ backing plate and then angled through the spacers to the original mounting points.

I'm very happy with how this turned out and will be doing the same with the other side to match this week. Other 6.5" aftermarket grilles will probably work installed in a similar way. This is particularly a good fit in my car because my other speakers (except tweeters) already have a/d/s/ grilles so it now all matches even better than before.

Another option for damaged spacer rings or broken grilles - not quite stock - but for me its even better.

Pictures to follow

Rob: I agree that speaker repair is the way to go. The stock 10 speaker system, if the speakers are OK, produces decent bass and overall sound. Once you start on the path of replacing the speakers, you end up having to replace EVERYTHING and almost certainly adding a subwoofer to get decent sound again. So, enjoy the rebuilt speakers.

Deeper rings would be a nice accessory for mounting aftermarket speakers. Alternatively, you can fit some pretty deep, large speakers if you open up the hole in the secondary sheet metal behind the inner quarter panel where the woofer mounts. The main problem I have found is that this is an open chamber and nearly all aftermarket speakers are designed to work in a sealed space.

I did some dremel surgery on my original mounts, and put Infinity 6.5 drivers in them with the original trim and grill. They look original, but now they work without all the buzzing. With the aftermarket head unit rated at 4 ohms, it's a good match.

For those determined to use the original low-impedance drivers, there are places around that sell just the foam repair rings. The old ones get carefully trimmed out with a razor knife, and the new pieces are glued in with trim cement. Last time I bought the surrounds like that (7 yrs), they were selling for $1 per inch of cone diameter. Might be 1.5-2x that now, still reasonable if you need originality.
