Air cooled 911

Salvaged PorscheĀ parts live on in the form of cool timepiece.

While we like to think that we can save every single old car, the truth is, many wind up as scrap. Whether it’s due to an accident or neglect. There’s no telling how many old 911’s have suffered this unfortunate fate. But we’d be willing to bet it’s a lot. After all, not everyone appreciates an air cooled 911 the way it should be appreciated.

But just because a classic Porsche winds up in the junkyard doesn’t mean it can’t live on. In a different form, of course. That’s the mission behind Yanko Design and their line of 901 Collection watches. The company takes salvaged parts from scraped air cooled 911 models and turns them into some seriously cool timepieces.

Not only do the watches use actual Porsche parts, the design pays tribute to 911 design with subtle and obvious touches. Because the refurbished metal used on each watch is different, every one is unique. Obvious cues include the Fuchs inspired back and numbers displayed in Porsche’s font.

Perhaps the coolest thing about the 901 Collection watches, other than their origin, is that each comes with a unique “VIN” number. The number is engraved on a story card that describes the 911 used to make the watch. So not only do you get a nice looking time piece, but a cool story to tell along with it.

While it’s sad to see iconic cars like the air cooled Porsche meet their maker, it’s also nice to know that some companies are working to keep their spirit alive. And we can buy that nifty little tribute and help it live on forever.
