Watch as a Unicorn 993 GT2 Rips Around Monza

There are rare and expensive Porsche models and then there is the 993 GT2.

Some Porsche enthusiasts say that if you’re going to buy a Porsche, it should be a 993. Without a doubt the 993 holds a special place in the brand’s history. It was the last of the air-cooled models, the staple Porsche had built its brand around. With the end of the 993, the beginning of a new era and ideology began for the company. Some people disagree with this shift however. They believe the true Porsche’s are air-cooled and anything else is well, just not as good.

If there was a best of the best for the air-cooled era, the 993 GT2 would unequivocally be at the top. It was everything the brand had done right with the 911 since then all combined in one package. The birth of the GT2 paved the way for only the most hardcore version of the 911 in the lineup. The 993 GT2 was in fact the first “GT2” model car Porsche ever produced. Why did the company built this car and does it still exist today? You best believe it. Thanks to Belgian-Motorsport on YouTube, we get to see a beautiful 993 GT2 make waves around the legendary Monza.

Porsche built this vehicle only to fulfill the requirements of FIA’s homologation rules for the then popular GT2 racing series. Thus, it was without a doubt a race car for the road in every sense of the term. The 3.6 liter flat-six powering the Porsche made an outstanding 444 HP and 432 lb/ft of torque back in 1994. That was a crazy amount of power for the time period. It had no creature comforts. This meant no power-seats, no radio and a roll cage to take up all the room you thought you had.

It’s no surprise that Porsche didn’t end up building too many of these things. Who in their right mind would have bought them then? Well if you did, you are most likely to be very rich now. Only between 50 and 60 of these models were ever built. Not a single model ever made it to the U.S. They couldn’t risk destroy them to test safety standards. In recent years, a 993 GT2 sold for $2.4 million dollars. Are you getting the pitch of how rare these cars are?

That’s why seeing an original GT2 thrashing the track at Monza truly puts a smile on our face. At the end of the day, the GT2 was not built to be a show car or a museum piece. It was built to go fast and win races. Thus, when we see an owner bringing the car out to its natural habitat, its hard not to fall in love. Bless the soul that brought their piece of history out to a classic race. We will toast a drink in your honor. What do you guys think of the GT2? Let us know in the comments below.
