‘Car and Driver:’ 2021 Porsche 911 Turbo S Is Crazy, Crazy Fast

How fast? The 2021 Porsche 911 Turbo S is second fastest vehicle Car And Driver has ever tested fast, and second only to another Porsche.

We already knew the 2021 Porsche 911 Turbo S is fast. Under the hood is a twin-turbo 3.7-liter flat-six that produces 640 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. On top of that, Porsche is always making the car lighter and improving the drivetrain’s efficiency. Porsche claimed the new 911 Turbo S would fly to 60 mph from zero in 2.6 seconds and stomp through the quarter-mile in 10.5 seconds.

However, Porsche has a habit of sandbagging it’s straight-line speed claims. Thankfully, though, Car And Driver has a habit of carrying out its own independent testing. In previous testing, Car And Driver clocked the outgoing 911 Turbo S nailing 60 mph in 0.2 seconds faster than its claimed speed. When testing the new model, the publication caught it hitting 60 mph 0.4 seconds faster than Porsche’s claim.

When you’re talking sub-three-second times, that’s a big difference. With a 0-60 mph time of 2.2 seconds, that’s insanely fast. That’s second only to the Porsche 918 Spyder hypercar’s time by a tenth of a second. Let that sink in a moment – a 2021 911 model costing $203,500 is only a tenth of a second slower than the $847,975 dollar hypercar Porsche built in limited numbers in 2014. Another fun fact is that it’s quicker off the mark than a Tesla Model S Performance in Cheetah mode, and Car And Driver clocked the 911 Turbo S nailing the quarter-mile in 10.1 seconds at 137 mph.

To get the quickest times, Car And Driver used Sport mode rather than Sport+. That allows the snappier settings in the drivetrain, but there’s no massive increase in downforce from the active aerodynamics. Another fun fact is that the 911 Turbo S went from zero to 30 mph time in a staggering 0.9 seconds due to the all-wheel-drive system’s ability to shovel up to up to 368 lb-ft of torque to the front wheels.
