A little Porsche hardware to spice up your listening experience.

Back in 2016 Porsche Design launched a new soundbar for the auto enthusiasts. The 911 Soundbar is a 2.1-channel virtual surround system built using the exhaust from a 911 GT3, and it looks incredible. Since that original release, Porsche has been periodically releasing new audio units built from various 911 parts. In 2017 we got a small bluetooth speaker built from tailpipe cover, and in 2018 we got an all-black version of the 911 Soundbar. This year Porsche Design is bringing us an updated 911 Soundbar Special Edition that comes with some serious upgrades.

The most noticeable change for the new speaker is more power, moving up to 300 watts from the older units’ 2oo watt rating. More enhancements come courtesy of 4K compatible HDMI inputs, and the addition of Spotify Connect and Chromecast, allowing for multiple speakers to synchronize and play audio at the same time. Now you can fill the whole garage with wireless music when you spending the Sunday detailing your 911.

For movie lovers, the 2020 version of the 911 Soundbar also supports Dolby Atmos. Dolby Atmos is a new form of surround sound technology that improves overall immersion by adding vertical audio channels into the mix. You still need content mastered in Atmos to take advantage of the new feature, but it makes this soundbar an interesting addition for certain home-theater enthusiasts.

Visually the new Special Edition of the 911 Soundbar sees some changes from the older units. The base is now white, and the muffler unit gets gloss black paint. The overall effect is a speaker that is classier and more modern looking. The original Soundbar featured an unpainted exhaust with a black base, and the second model in 2018 featured an all-black colorway.

Production of the new 911 Soundbar Special Edition will be limited to just 500 units, each individually numbered. The suggested retail price is $4,750 and it will be on sale starting in December. They can be ordered from Porsche Design stores, select authorized dealers, or online.
