Taking on the Nürburgring Südschleife in a 911 GT3 RS
Former racing circuit offers a little challenge & lots of thrills in a 911 GT3 RS.Â
The Südschleife (South Loop) was once a racing circuit in Germany that was a part of the famed Nürburgring. It has long since been retired from racing, and operates as a road. Henry Catchpole of Carfection decided to take on this still wild and often serpentine road in the perfect ride: A Porsche. And not just any Porsche, but a 991.2 Porsche 911 GT3 RS. As he says in the video, “What better place to drive a road racer than an old racing circuit that’s now a road?”
Unfortunately, conditions are not optimal for Catchpole as it has been raining. Catchpole is (obviously) thrilled with the RS; the red is sexy, the decals are perfect, the gold rims are hot, and yes, that rear wing is amazing. “It looks so aggressive,” Catchpole says. “Park it next to a GT3 and suddenly the GT3 looks all shy and retiring.”
“It looks fantastic, but what are the differences to the driving experience?” Catchpole asks. He soon finds out as he takes on the still challenging road. The 4L engine is a beast, and Catchpole finds it delivers on power in excess. The exhaust note is amazing. “Different noises, all sorts of revs,” he points out. “And that is what makes it so much more interesting than a turbocharged engine.”
The GT3 RS handles beautifully on the road, remarkably so considering the wetness. “The way it corners is just so instant,” he enthuses, “The rear feels more playful. It just wants to get involved.”
