Porsche 964 RS

Time capsule cars tend to generate mixed feelings. But this gorgeous, barely used Porsche 964 RS is nothing short of amazing!

A lot of folks (including ourselves) tend to have mixed feelings about people who buy cars and store them like some kind of priceless keepsake. This is especially controversial when it comes to Porsches, because they’re, well, meant to be driven. Not stowed away like some kind of rare coin or baseball card, surfacing to see the sun only once in a while. But on the other hand, those who preserve classics like this incredible Porsche 964 RS can also be heroes.

Porsche 964 RS

After all, when was the last time you saw a Porsche 964 RS this nice? The incredible condition of the car, which popped up for sale at auto broker/restoration shop/museum Canepa, is a testament to many years of care. And, of course, little actual use. This particular car sports only 14,018 miles on the odometer. Which is at least better than zero, we suppose.

But make no mistake – this is a special car for more reasons than its current condition and past use. For starters, when was the last time you saw one in Midnight Blue Metallic? Under that stunning paint lies a super-lightweight, rear-wheel drive, European-only monster of a car. Sitting 40mm lower than a stock 964, the RS came ready to race with a tuned suspension and stripped out interior devoid of anything not needed for going fast.

All of which was good for a 345 pound reduction from stock. Throw in a hot(ter) flat-six and a close ratio manual transmission, and you’ve got a race car for the street that hearkens back to Porsche’s very origins. Now, unlike when it was new, you can buy this Porsche 964 RS in America. It might not exactly be new, but thanks to one resilient owner, it’s about as close as you’ll get. And we certainly don’t have mixed feelings about that!
