RWB Transforms a 964 Into a Wide Body ‘Stargazer’

RWB 964

The RWB team created this Rubystone Red 964 at Street Race Solutions in Queensland, Australia.

RAUH-Welt BEGRIFF (RWB) is a Porsche tuning shop from Japan that was founded by Akira Nakai. The company is known for fitting classic Porsches with extreme wide body kits. The builds may make some Porsche diehards cringe. However, many in the car community applaud the efforts and RWB builds have achieved a cult like following. And the newest piece of machinery for RWB fans to drool over is a 964 named ‘Stargazer’ that was recently built by Nakai and his team. The build took place at an event held at Street Race Solutions in Queensland, Australia.

Street Race Solutions recently posted a video of the build on their YouTube channel. In this video we get to see the rather, um, unique build process. Such as when Nakai kicks the front brake rotor in place with his Croc-covered foot. The end result is a Rubystone Red 964 that will stand out in any crowd. But is this a car that you would want to own? Are you willing to hack up a classic air cooled 911 to slap on a wide body kit like this? That is a decision that only you can make.

The Car

Custom 964

Every RWB build starts with an air cooled 911. These cars are getting increasingly rare and more expensive by the day. Many are preserved, babied, and rarely driven. RWB throws all that out the window. They build cars that are meant to be seen. So, if you don’t care about originality but instead want a car that will turn all the heads at your local cars and coffee event, then an RWB might be for you. Each build is unique, and prices will vary depending on the specific options you choose. But figure on spending at least $50,000 on top of the price of the car.

The Build Process

RWB build

Imagine another custom Porsche builder, Singer building one of their seven-figure masterpieces. Precision, quality, and a lot of time go into every build. RWB takes the opposite approach. Not saying that their cars won’t last. But as you can clearly see in the video, the build process is not exactly all about precision. The RWB build process seems to be much looser. A Singer gives the impression that it could last for a thousand years. The RWB gives the impression that in a year or two you may be dealing with flapping fenders and other bits falling off. That may not be the case at all, but you can’t help but wonder about longevity when you see how the car was slapped together. Of course, the RWB will cost a fraction of a Singer so that is a consideration.

The End Result

It really depends on your perspective. You might see this custom 964 as a stunning work of art. Or you might think that the wide body kit and multiplane rear wing makes a classic 911 look like a silly cartoon. But that is what the automotive world is all about. It is about choice. Not everyone has the same taste in cars. You should be free to express yourself as a car enthusiast in any way you like. If you love the RWB style, then go for it. Driving a car like that everyday is better than letting a restored original 964 rot away in your garage.
