Porsches From the 'Aughts' Can Get Upgraded PCCM Infotainment

PCCM stands for Porsche Classic Communication Management. And it means your mid 2000’s Porsche can have CarPlay directly from Porsche.

Technology moves fast. In 2000 and 2010 respectively, the most popular mobile phones were the Nokia 3310 and Apple iPhone 4. Yeah that’s a technological leap. But your car had to deal with it’s standard radio for that duration, too. And quite frankly, the automotive industry often has to play catch-up. Porsche understands that a lot of their cars are still on the road and being enjoyed by drivers. So Porsche has launched PCCM Plus.

Porsche Classic Communications Management Plus is a continuation of Porsche’s already established venture into equipping older cars with newer tech. Many will remember that classic porsches now have single-DIN units available, and now newer models do, too. Porsche 911’s of the 997 generation from 2005-2008, Boxster and Cayman 987 models from 2005 through 2008 and Cayenne’s from 2003 to 2008 all have a PCCM radio available for them now, according to TheDrive.

These new infotainment units connect directly to the factory radio wiring, and include all the convenience of modern Porsche units. In fact, you don’t lose any previous functionality. In-dash navigation screens will continue to be available. Apple CarPlay and Andriod Auto are included, and you even get some extras. Trip computers are now added, and depending on the equipment of your car, the radio can be made to work with saved driver settings.

There is one thing they don’t say specifically, but is evident from the pictures. Your CarPlay connection will be via a cord, and not wireless. Considering the overall advantages, that’s not a big hassle to deal with. But it does seem a bit unusual since almost all modern systems can do phone mirroring wirelessly. Beggars can’t be choosers, I suppose.

Best of all, because it comes from Porsche, the install looks factory. Because it is. For years, the only options were gawdy aftermarket units that lit up like a disco ball and never really matched the subtle elegance of a Porsche interior. Audiophiles like myself enjoy the better connection through Bluetooth. No more trying to download songs on to a memory stick and putting it into an SD card player.
