Porsche Sprint Trophy USA West 2020 Kickoff: Track Time Tuesday Presented by Yokohama Tire’s ADVAN APEX
Porsche GT cars descend upon the Utah Motorsport Campus to battle for supremacy. Ride along with the class winning GT4 Clubsport MR.
Virtual racing is fun, and was all we had for a while, but nothing beats the real thing. In the United States and around the world Motorsport activities are slowly starting up again. Real drivers are getting behind the wheels of real cars and pushing them to the limits. One of the recently resumed racing series is the Porsche Sprint Trophy USA West. Competent Motorsport partnered with Porsche Motorsport North America to develop this single make racing program.
In 2020 there will be six classes featured: Porsche 991.2 GT3 Cup, Porsche 991.1 GT3 Cup, Porsche Cayman GT4 Club Sport, Porsche GT4 Cup Trophy, Porsche 991.2 GT3 Cup MR and Porsche GT2 RS Club Sport. All vehicles must be stock as delivered by Porsche Motorsport. With Yokohama being the title sponsor for the series, all cars will be competing on the ADVAN A005 race slick.
Are you not into the newest Porsche race cars? Do you think the last true 911 ever made was the 993? Well, Competent Motorsport and PMNA have you covered as well with the Porsche Air-Cooled Cup USA series. This series follows the same race schedule as the Sprint Trophy but is limited to the older air-cooled cars. There are four classes in this series. They consist of both Porsche 964/993 Cup cars along with Porsche Spec 2-liter platforms and Spec 3 3.2 platforms.
Each of the event racing programs include driver coaching, practice sessions, and sprint races. The objective is to not just have exciting racing but also to help drivers hone their race craft. That is what separates these events from other club or post club level race events. Competent Motorsport wants the drivers to race but also leave at the end of the weekend as a better driver than when they arrived.
Opening weekend had some challenging conditions. Temperatures soared to near 100 degrees and cross winds gusted up to 20 mph. On the TextVending Racing YouTube channel they posted some great in-car video of their Porsche 718 GT4 Clubsport MR entry. Ride along as the race car tops 140 mph before braking hard for turn 1. This car managed to qualify P2 and finished on the top step of the podium. Not a bad way to start off the season. If you are going to roast in a hot race car, you may as well win.
There are five more weekends scheduled for the Sprint Trophy USA West 2020 season. The next event will be held in Austin, TX at the Circuit of the Americas July 31 – August 2. We may not be able to attend the racing action in-person, but we can at least enjoy the online videos of this competitive and exciting series. Even if we are not competing, the armchair racers among us can learn something ourselves while watching. Hopefully, it will not be too much longer before we can attend races like this in person again. In the meantime, welcome back real-life racing, we missed you.
