Porsche Recalls Nearly Every Taycan It Ever Sold in the U.S.
Nearly 32,000 Taycan vehicles are being recalled due to potential brake failure.
In 2019 Porsche began to build the Taycan, their first-ever all-electric car. Despite not having an internal combustion engine, the Taycan has all the performance you could ever want from a Porsche. Last year it outsold both the Panamera and 718 model lines. However, this week the Taycan hit a speed bump. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued a recall for 31,689 Taycan vehicles that were built between October 21, 2019, and June 13, 2024. That covers just about every Taycan Porsche has ever sold in the U.S.
The issue is with the brakes, the front brakes specifically. The front brake hoses may develop cracks over time which can lead to a loss of brake fluid and front braking performance. Even if this condition were to occur, the rear brakes would remain functional. And while the recall covers nearly every Taycan in the country, it is estimated that only 5 percent have this problem.
Finding the Issue
Porsche began to receive reports of a potential issue back in June 2023. As of today, there have been a total of seven reports filed. Porsche began rigorous testing in an effort to determine the root cause of the issue. According to NHTSA documents the issue is caused by “front brake hose compression during certain steering and driving conditions stresses the front brake hoses at the point of minimum bending radius, over time, leading to potential damage to the inner fabric layer of the front brake hoses.” If this happens, brake fluid could leak out. Drivers would be made aware of this condition with “brake fluid low” or “PSM failure” messages. There have been no accidents reported in the U.S. because of this issue. One accident outside of the U.S. has been reported with no injuries.
Fixing the Issue
Porsche will fix the issue at no cost to the consumer. The fix will include the installation of new front brake hoses with an increased bending radius. These new front brake hoses were implemented in production on May 13, 2024. Dealers will be notified on July 3, and owners will be notified on August 16. Taycan Recalls
Porsche builds exceptional vehicles that are traditionally extremely reliable and dependable. However, the Taycan is a drastic departure for Porsche and there is no question that it is experiencing some growing pains. According to NHTSA the 2020 Taycan has had 9 recalls and 63 complaints. The 2021 model has been recalled 18 times. For the sake of comparison, the 2020 911 Carrera has 6 recalls and only 1 complaint. And that was the first year for the all-new 992 model.
Will the all-new Macan EV face similar issues? Or will the lessons learned with the Taycan payoff? Only time will tell. However, knowing Porsche, we would bet that they will continue to improve. And to be fair to Porsche, Tesla has been building EVs for much longer, and the 2020 Model 3 has been recalled 19 times with a shocking 335 complaints. And recall or not, a Porsche is always cooler than a Tesla.
