Located underneath a California dealership, some of the most historic Porsche models are on display at the Wunderground Museum.

There are several places where you can view rare and significant Porsche models. For one, there is of course the Porsche museum itself. In addition, there are many other museums around that have historic Porsche vehicles on display for the public to enjoy. Most of these locations are well known and well-advertised. However, there are some hidden gems out there.

One of those gems is the Wunderground Museum. It is located underneath the Porsche Santa Clarita dealership. The space was previously used as underground parking for a Saturn dealership. It now holds an ever-changing display of over a dozen of the most famous Porsche vehicles ever created. No offense Saturn owners, but no one would want to look at an Ion over a 550 Spyder.

Beau Boeckmann, president and COO of Galpin Motors, a Southern California-based dealer group was the man behind the concept. His goal was to bring some of the great Porsche history into the dealership experience. It sure beats the traditional coffee and snacks you will find at other dealers. Local collectors’ loan some of their prized possessions to the Wunderground exhibit.

For example, Rod Emory and Cameron Healey loaned their 1951 Porsche 356 SL Gmünd Coupe for the display. Other notable cars that have been on display include a 1955 550 Spyder owned by Jerry Seinfeld. A 1979 Porsche 911S that was once co-owned by Paul Newman. There are modern vehicles as well such as the 2020 Cayenne Turbo. In the days of that Paul Newman 911 people probably never imagined that one day a Porsche SUV would be in a museum. That is a topic for another day.

The display can be seen from the dealership above through a glass floor. However, the best way to view it is to head to the Wunderground itself. The exhibit is open Monday through Saturday from 9 am to 6 pm. On Sunday you can walk through from 11am to 3pm.

The cost to enjoy the cars on display is nothing. Yup, you got that right, there is no cost to checkout all of the amazing cars hiding underground here. And that is not all. In the middle of the display is a glass-walled conference room that can accommodate up to 16 people. It would be the perfect place to host a special event. Perhaps my Editor would like to host a gathering of all Rennlist writers here? Well, one can hope anyway.

Wunderground

The Wunderground is a cool concept that hopefully other Porsche dealers across the country can pick up on. Whether you are picking up a new GT3 or a preowned Macan, or you are just a fan of the brand, the doors are open to you. You will be immersed in a little bit of the extensive Porsche history.

It is easy for a Porsche enthusiast to take that history for granted. However, a lot of automakers cannot offer a rich history like this. It is nice for those in the area to swing by the local dealership and get a real taste of what makes Porsche special.
