If you’re going to restore a Porsche this significant, it’s probably best left up to the experts. And who’s better qualified than Porsche themselves?

Have a gander at the this fully restored Le Mans-winning 911, brought to you by the fine folks at Porsche Classic. This is the 911 2.5 S/T that took home best in class class honors at the 1972 24 Hours of Le Mans.

This winner, which was based on the 2.4S, is one of only 24 special models ever made. The car was specifically developed to compete in Group 3 and Group 4 races.

She may look great now, but that certainly wasn’t the case when this baby showed up at Porsche’s classic division. Apparently she was wrecked during a race, poorly fixed up, and modified to look like a later 911 model.

As you can see in the first photo below, the car was in horrid condition when a Porsche collector in the States came across her. Fortunately, the collector could see the importance of the car, even underneath all that rust and the roof dented in by kids jumping on top of it. (Kids these days, right?) So he sent it off to Porsche’s classic center.

Porsche Classic spent two years doing a full restoration job to bring her back to her original state of beauty — fresh yellow paint, racing livery and all. And now she’s not only a classic race car, she’s also a show car, having just been displayed at the Techno Classica in Essen, Germany.
