Porsche 992 911 Turbo S vs McLaren 765LT Drag Race

Can the mighty 992 911 Turbo S take down the insanely powerful, lightweight McLaren 765LT?

It’s no secret in the automotive world that if you like to go fast in a straight line, the 911 Turbo is the way to go. This has been the case for a number of years now as Porsche has bestowed this particular model with the components (and magic) necessary to beat just about anything in the world in a drag race. It also rings true with the latest iteration of this iconic sports car – the 992 911 Turbo S – as we can see in this video from Carwow, which pitted the mighty machine against the more track-focused McLaren 765LT recently.

That’s not to say the 765LT isn’t a formidable car in a straight line either, as it’s packing a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 that spews out 754 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. WIth a curb weight of around 2,952 pounds, the mighty McLaren can do 0-60 in 2.7 seconds, with a quarter-mile time in the low tens or high nines, depending on the driver and various other factors like traction and weather.

Then we have the Porsche 992 911 Turbo S, which is powered by a twin-turbo 3.7-liter flat-six that generates 640 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque and is mated to an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Tipping the scales at a heftier 3,646 pounds, the 911 Turbo S does 0-60 in around 2.2 seconds and the quarter-mile in 10.1, despite its power and weight disadvantage compared to the McLaren.

Regardless, drag racing is all about real-world results, and that’s what this video provides. In the first race, perhaps predictably, the Porsche leaps off the line and gains an early lead on the 765LT, though the McLaren closes that gap at the top end and takes the win – just barely. The 765LT managed to run a 10 flat, while the 911 Turbo S was right on its heels with a 10.2-second quarter-mile.

The duo decides to run it back with a roll race at 50 miles-per-hour for a half-mile, and once again, the Porsche walks away from the McLaren right off the bat. Once the cars crest 120 mph, however, the 765LT catches up and passes the 911, making it clear that if you want to beat the former with the latter, you might want to choose a shorter race.

Regardless, as Carwow points out, the 911 Turbo S costs roughly half what the 765LT does, and it’s a far more practical car to boot. Historically speaking, the Porsche will be much more reliable in the long run as well, making it the obvious choice for those that actually like to drive and enjoy their cars – even if it is a touch slower on the top end that its pricey exotic foe.
