Porsche 911 GT2 RS Officially Destroys Nurburgring Record
All-new Porsche 911 GT2 RS breaks Lamborghini’s record on its very first lap, then goes on to post a best time of 6:47.30.
It was only a few months ago, roughly six to be exact, that the Porsche 918’s Nuburgring production car record fell to the Lamborghini Huracan Peformante. Lambo’s latest posted a best lap time of 6:52.01, which promptly sent shockwaves through the automotive world. But the Huracan’s time at the top didn’t last long, as the latest Porsche 911 GT2 RS is every bit as fast as we thought it would be. And more.
How fast, you ask? Well, the (new) mightiest 911 only needed one lap to break the record. On their very first go, Lars Kern and Nick Tandy managed to best that 6:52.01 mark. They followed that up by running five more laps, all sub-6:50. The best of the bunch was a stellar 6:47.30 lap, a time that blows away the previous record by nearly five seconds.
Now, we had a pretty good idea that Porsche’s latest and greatest was going to easily break the 7-minute mark. After all, the car was already roughly timed as such by a curious bystander. But the official times, made public by Porsche in their own cockpit video, are absolutely bonkers.
If that isn’t incredible enough, consider the fact that the new Porsche 911 GT2 RS is a full ten seconds quicker than the mighty 918 around Germany’s famous track. If that isn’t proof enough that we’re living in the golden age of performance, we don’t know what is.
We’d like to think that Porsche’s incredible feat will stand for some time. But a lot of folks also thought that it would be a while before Lamborghini’s record was broken. So needless to say, we won’t hold our breath.
