Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Blesses Monza with Flat-Six Symphony: Track Time Tuesday Presented by Nitto NT05 Tire

Rumors persist that the forthcoming Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 will bring flat-six power back with it. And now we’ve got some video proof!

Ever since Porsche rolled out the 718 Boxer and Cayman, fans have decried the model’s switch to four-cylinder power. It’s really the only gripe anyone has with the otherwise excellent platform. Meanwhile, rumors persist that a revival of the GT4 is coming, and that it will signal a triumphant return for Porsche’s legendary flat-six power. Now, we’re getting our first look at this magical new creation, what might be the 2019 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport.

The revelation comes to us from YouTuber NM2255 Car Videos, who filmed the lightly disguised Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport at a private test day. Rounding the Monza circuit, it’s pretty clear that what lies under the hood is most certainly not a four banger. Aero is enhanced by the requisite massive wing, a new front bumper, rear diffuser, and beefier exhaust. This car also clearly sports a PDK gearbox, which is evident from the lightning quick downshifts heading into the corners.

Granted, the noises coming from this modified 718 aren’t your typical, naturally-aspirated flat-six sounds. Many in the comments section speculate that it could possibly retain the regular 718’s turbo setup. And sure enough, you can almost hear a little flutter here and there. But could this just be a completely new engine, or perhaps a detuned 911 lump like before? It’s pretty hard to tell given our video evidence.

Either way, a return to flat-six power is a major development for the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4, both in street and Clubsport trim. Porsche has shown a willingness to listen to its fans in recent years, bringing back the manual transmission and even stripped-down models. And now, it appears that they’ll continue that trend by bringing back one of our very favorite modern Porsches!
