Is this One-Off Porsche 914-6 Badass or Blasphemy?

Porsche 914-6

Porsche’s unique custom bodywork brings out the critics.

There was a time when kit cars were all the rage. Typically constructed on something like the Pontiac Fiero, these rebodied Frankensteins offered exotic car looks at economy car prices. Eventually, folks became wise to the fact that being a poser isn’t exactly cool. But this interesting custom Porsche build isn’t really pretending to be something it’s not. Or is it? We couldn’t help but spot the unique rebodied ride over on the Hemmings classifieds and swooped in for a closer look.

The Ferrari Fly Yellow ride began life as a 1975 Porsche 914-6, a car very much unloved in the world of Porsche. But the 914-6 isn’t exactly a common car, with production numbers hovering around 3,300. Compare that to the 118,000+ 914s produced, and you see what we mean. Plus, this hotter version of the compact used a proper 2.0 liter flat six derived from the the 911T in lieu of the typical four banger.

It’s very apparent that somebody spent a lot of time and money on this car,
but was it money well spent?

Still, we guess you can’t blame a guy for wanting to turn his ordinary-looking 914 into something a bit more exotic. So, somewhere along the way, this former collector’s car received a full on custom body, which actually retains some Porsche-esque styling. And of course, there is also an outrageous louvered rear end with a humongous shelf spoiler.

It still has the original 2.0 liter six, but obviously there’s no going back to stock at this point. Aside from the custom bodywork, the car has 911 front calipers, vented rear discs, and 17″ Fuchs. It’s very apparent that somebody spent a lot of time and money on this car, but was it money well spent? With an estimated auction price of $23,000, we’d say the owner would probably have been better served leaving it stock.

Regardless, you probably won’t ever see another Porsche 914-6 like it. And that may be a good thing.
