993 Turbo

Do you want a 993 Turbo with just over 2,000 miles on the odometer? If so, here is your chance, but bring all your money.

This my friends, is what 401k accounts are really for. Retirement is overrated anyway. I mean how much golf do you really want to play? Besides, work wouldn’t be so bad if you were able to drive to the office in a 1996 993 Turbo, right? That is how I see things anyway. Perhaps that is why my career as a financial advisor never really took off. Anyway, for those that do have access to a large pile of cash you might want to head on over to Bring a Trailer to take a look at this stunning RoW 993 Turbo with just 3,700 kilometers (2,300 miles) on the clock. As of this writing the auction has just opened and will run until Tuesday, February 13. There are just two bids so far, but the top bid is already $250,000.

Nowadays people tend to drool over paint to sample colors, but this car looks absolutely perfect in Polar Silver over black leather. And it is basically factory fresh aside from a couple of paint chips. All original equipment is included in the sale as well as the tool kit, service records and a clean Carfax report. The car is being sold with a clean California title. It was originally sold new in Japan, but the selling dealer imported it in December 2023. And now you can import it right to your own garage.

993 Turbo

Interior

The 993 Turbo was the first Porsche Turbo (we are talking about the capital T Turbo cars) to use twin turbochargers. It was also the first Turbo to use all wheel drive. They were the last of the air-cooled Turbo cars. Between 1995 and 1998 approximately 5,000 993 Turbo cars were built. The 3.6L twin turbo engine in 1996 punched out 408 horsepower and was able to rocket to 60 mph in less than 4 seconds. Top speed was about 180 mph. This car could indeed kill bugs fast.

The auction is off to a hot start with bidding already up to a quarter million dollars. And with a week to go the final price is likely to go well above that. But Porsche is not making these classics anymore and this is likely one of the best examples left on the planet. And although it is nearly 30 years old it still has blistering performance and just look at it. The 993 Turbo is one of the best-looking cars Porsche ever created. At least to my eyes.

The Problem

whale tail

This is a stunning car but there is a big problem. The car was driven less than 100 miles per year. So, what is the new owner going to do with it? This car is going to sell for a large premium based on the condition and extremely low mileage. That means it is unlikely that the new owner will lay out the kind of money needed to buy this car and then put any real miles on it. I hope I am wrong, but my guess is that ten years from now this car still doesn’t have 3,000 miles on it. And that is a real shame. Porsche built a fantastic car here. This is a real driver’s car. It should be on the road, not hiding in a garage. If you are bidding on this fine machine, I wish you good luck. I also hope that you drive it if you win the auction. You and the car both deserve it.
