Luck o’ the Irish: Supercar Sales Booming in Ireland

For the first time in several years, luxury car sales have shown a marked increase in Ireland. In 2017, 3,000 supercars were purchased or imported to Ireland, almost three times the vehicles sold in 2011 during the recession. These growing sales figures are indeed a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow for car enthusiasts.
Vehicle sales in Ireland decreased considerably from 2008 and 2011 due to the recession. As the economy grows, so do car sales. But not for just any cars. There is a definite boom in the luxury car market. And some Irish celebrities, such as Conor McGregor, are all too happy to do their part for the economy. McGregor has an impressive collection of sexy sports cars, including a stunning luxury BMW i8 hybrid.
According to The Irish Sun, Jaguar is the most popular luxury brand in the Irish market, followed by Lexus, and Porsche. And as the trends favor EVs, Teslas are also making a mark.
“More exotic cars were registered in Ireland in 2017.” said John Byrne from the auto website Cartell.ie. “We saw more numbers for Porsche, Jaguar, and Maserati. Right at the top end of the market, we are still seeing a handful of Aston Martins and Ferraris with new Irish plates, too.”
Many of the cars sold are imported. A large number of these cars were purchased in U.K., and driven back to Ireland. Pretty easy for importing a sleek supercar. This trend will no doubt continue as long as Irish consumers benefit from exchange rates which have fluctuated in the U.K. due to economic anxiety over Brexit. As used car salesmen have said for years, their loss is our gain.
