Is the Porsche 911 Turbo S Faster than the GT2 RS and GT3 RS?
Porsche’s 911 GT2 RS and 911 GT3 are track-bred monsters, but is the wicked fast 911 Turbo S faster?
Porsche’s 911 line has a lot to offer. The GT cars are stripped down, hard core track day forces. The 911 Turbo is a staple in thrilling performance with usable comfort. It stands to reason, then, that the purpose-built GT cars would thrash the Turbo S in a drag race, right? That might not be the case.
Carwow took a 911 Turbo S, a GT2 RS, and a GT3 to a runway to host a good old fashioned drag race. In the left corner, the 992 generation Turbo S has 650 horsepower and all wheel drive. The middle contender is a formidable 991 generation GT2 RS with a monstrous 700 horsepower. Finally, a lightweight 992 generation GT3 with 510 horsepower rounds out the roster. The GT cars are hard charging RWD track cars. However, the Turbo S showed up with Porsche’s sure-footed all wheel drive system.
Only One Winner
Mat Watson and friends put the cars through the ringer. After warming up the tires, the three cars lined up on a barren runway. Each car had its own driver aids to assist with launches, but the results never changed.
In every one of seven quarter mile drag races, the 911 Turbo S was the victor. The Turbo S’ AWD system provided enormous grip for hard launches, even faster than the track-ready GT cars. The result was a 10.2 second quarter mile run for the Turbo S, with the GT both finishing mere tenths later.
Watson didn’t stop there, though. In a couple of rolling start races, the 911 GT2 RS was the clear winner with a surplus of horsepower at its disposal. Finally, in braking tests from 100 mph, the GT cars both beat out the Turbo S. Carwow, then, established that all three of these 911’s are serious performers.
