Future Shock: Porsche X Race Car Concept
If the future of racing looks anything like the Porsche X, we’ll soon be living in a sci-fi movie.
Porsche is one of the more popular brands among intrepid designers, for obvious reasons. There’s a certain passion, history, and reputation in Stuttgart that’s highly appealing to up and coming artists. A major part of which consists of their incredible motorsports history. And with race cars evolving at a frantic pace, it makes sense to wonder where they’ll go next.
The answer could look something like this Porsche X race car concept dreamed up by designer Zhang Ningbo. It’s an absolutely stunning exercise in design befitting of the Porsche legacy. And despite the incredibly futuristic lines of the car, if you squint, you can almost see that inherent Porsche DNA. Especially from the side view.
The model name “X” isn’t just some cheesy reference to the future, either. You’ll find the car’s namesake in design elements like the headlights and, well, the entire shape of the car. The sides sweep over the vented wheel wells and up onto the roof to form a giant “X”. But our favorite design element might be that giant front air intake that looks like it wants to consume anything that gets in its way.
Being a future race car, the Porsche X is obviously an electric vehicle. But here’s where the controversy comes in: It doesn’t have a driver’s seat. Instead, there’s a 360 degree camera used to pilot the car around a race track. Unlike some recent race car concepts that drive autonomously, however, this one is controlled by a human via remote control, from outside the car. Kind of like a drone.

Whether you love or hate that idea, it’s hard to argue with the appearance of the Porsche X. For decades we’ve been promised the future, but this concept actually looks like it.
