Cayenne camera car

Many Porsche cars are well known for their time in front of the camera. However, this Cayenne makes a living on the other side of the lens.

From Le Mans to Risky Business to Sixteen Candles, there is no shortage of famous Porsche movie cars. These cars are well known for their time on screen in classic movies. However, this Porsche Cayenne stays behind the scenes and makes other cars the star. If you think your backup camera is fancy, you ain’t seen nothing yet. This Cayenne has a $100,000 camera mounted on a giant spinning arm on its roof. It is basically a self-contained movie studio. It exists to make impressive car commercials. Rarely has it ever seen the spotlight, until now.

Commercial production company Advent Films is the owner and operator of this custom-built Porsche. Recently they loaned the car to YouTube star Doug Demuro. In the video posted to his channel he gives the Cayenne his usual treatment. However, this time, the review is not so much about the car itself. DeMuro focuses on the cutting-edge technology in the car that makes it so special, and expensive.

If you want one of these for yourself, be prepared to part with your 991 911 R and some cash. The Cayenne camera car is going to run you about half a million dollars. The good news is this version does have room for an extra passenger. Sort of.

DeMuro begins his walkaround by pointing out what is likely to be the first thing you notice about the car. Well, besides the 500-pound camera system mounted to the roof. He points out that the entire car, including all lights, are covered in a matte finish. The reason for this is that when you are filming you do not want a glare off the paint. So, all reflective surfaces are covered up on this Cayenne.

This would render the car illegal to drive on the road, but the light covers can be popped off if it does need to be driven. Although, in most cases the Cayenne is towed behind a sprinter van to get from location to location.

Cayenne Towed

The camera arm can spin 360-degrees around the car. In addition, it can be raised as high as sixteen feet in the air or a low as ground level. This provides the optimal shooting angle for your filming needs. That is why a car like this exists in the first place.

Yes, it is complex and expensive but so is filming a car commercial. If you want different angles and shots of the car you are filming, this Cayenne can do it in just one pass. Without it, you are looking at resetting the entire shot over and over again for each angle you want. It saves a tremendous amount of time and time is money.

Cayenne cockpit

The cockpit of the Cayenne camera car has a police car meets storm chaser vibe to it. There are cables and monitors everywhere. The equipment in here is important not just to control all the camera settings and the camera arm itself. But it is needed for the crew inside to stay in constant communication with each other. This Cayenne requires a crew of four people to work in perfect harmony to get the most out of the equipment.

There is also room for two passengers to observe what is going on in real time. What a minute. Doesn’t four plus two equal six? Doesn’t the Cayenne only have room for five? Well, in the Cayenne camera car there is a special side facing seat in the rear cargo area for the sixth person. It is from here that the occupant controls the focus of the camera.

This Porsche may not dazzle with zero to sixty times, or track records, but it is cool in its own right. It goes to show just how versatile the Porsche Cayenne can be. A lot of folks hated the idea when they first hit the streets. And there are still some people that just don’t like the fact that Porsche builds SUVs. However, there is no denying that like their cars, Porsche makes some of the best SUVs you can buy. And if you want a Porsche to film movies or commercials with, there is really only one choice.
