Stuttgart’s new philosophy of using turbos across the Carrera lineup to lessen pollution is well dissected by EVO’s Harry Metcalfe in the 2016 Porsche 911 Carrera S review video below. And unfortunately, he believes the turbos are a “bit of a disappointment” in power delivery.

The auto manufacturing industry as a whole is trending towards lowering displacement and adding turbochargers in hopes of increasing combustion efficiency, whilst still attaining power. This is being done by companies from Ford to Ferrari. However lots of sensations are affected, the largest being the feel of acceleration. That quick, on-demand power of the throttle that the larger, naturally aspirated engines are known for.

Porsche has a long history in turbocharging. It’s the right direction, and now is the time for them to extend their turbo tech down the lineup. Porsche has lowered displacement of the base 911 to 3-liters, while adding twin-turbos. Harry feels they need tuning. Listen to how he speaks of the instantaneous racetrack-proven responsiveness of the 911 GT3 while he’s behind the wheel of the 2016 Porsche 911 Carrera S. He knows there could be less lag, and that the car could be quicker off the back foot.

Harry does have some nice things to say too. He swoons over the chassis, suspension, materials, and the entire feel of the Porsche. His Porsche fan-boyness just spills out like molasses with how comfortable and livable the chassis is, while being so capable and willing. Now with the addition of all-wheel steering, it’s just a pleasure to drive. Or as Harry puts it: “Point in a direction, and it just goes.”
