Faulty connecting rods in the 4.0-liter flat-six found in the Cayman GT4 and 718 Spyder cause Porsche to recall 2021 models.

While the 718 Boxster and Cayman are considered entry-level Porsche models, they do come packing plenty of heat. The highest-tier examples of each, the Cayman GT4 and 718 Spyder feature a 4.0-liter flat six-cylinder with 414 horsepower. Each model also has a GTS 4.0 trim that features the same engine with slightly less output at 394 horsepower. Still, this is more than enough grunt to feel that Porsche feeling. Both variants have plenty of critical acclaim for their driving experience. However, 190 folks who have a 2021 model on order are going to have to wait for that experience.

Car and Driver recently released an article outlining a new Porsche recall for these models. Porsche explains that the cause of the recall is fault engine components that can lead to some very substantial failures. The result is many of these examples needing a complete engine replacement.

Porsche explains that the problem lies in faulty connecting rods that can crack, causing terminal engine failure. The connecting rod connects the pistons to the crankshaft, and when they fail, they can cause entire engine destruction. Additionally, Porsche states that the issue has the potential to cause fires.

While there have yet to be any issues as a result of these faulty connecting rods, Porsche understandable issued the recall as a preemptive measure. The affected models include the Porsche Cayman GT4, Porsche 718 Spyder, Porsche Cayman GTS 4.0, and Porsche Boxster GTS 4.0.

Fortunately, only 190 total vehicles are affected. Furthermore, only 20 of the affected vehicles have been delivered to owners thus far. Porsche states that all 20 of the delivered vehicles’ owners have been notified of the recall and that their cars will receive a complete engine replacement in order to remedy the issue.

Cayman and Boxster delays are currently not official

Furthermore, Porsche says they will examine the remaining 170 vehicles under the recall to determine if engine replacement is necessary. This includes any examples that have already been purchased by consumers but have yet to be delivered. Thanks to this recall, though, those who have purchased one will have to wait.

Additionally, Porsche has issued a “stop sale” on both variants of the Cayman and Boxster equipped with the 4.0-liter engine. This means that consumers can not purchase new models and that those who have them on order will have to wait for the issue to be resolved before they can take delivery of their car. Furthermore, Car and Driver states that the Porsche representative did not give an estimate on the delay.

However, Rennlist user Afishunc purchased a 2021 Cayman GT4 that is being held at the dealership until it has been inspected. Additionally, he received a letter stating that Porsche estimates a delay of three to six months to resolve the issue.

Though the wait is unfortunate for both current and would-be buyers of 4.0-equipped 718 Cayman and Boxsters, it’s definitely something worth waiting for.
