911 Le Mans Classic Clubsport, the Ultimate Restomod

By -

Limited-run Porsche 911 Le Mans Classic Clubsport is the creation of Paul Stephens in the U.K.

The restomod market has grown considerably over the past decade, and as a result, the 911 comes in many different styles and shades. In this case, U.K. workshop Paul Stephens has produced a beautiful period drivers classic 911 inspired by the Le Mans Classic historic race. In this Carfection video, Alex Goy gives us the rundown on what this lightweight air-cooled 911 is like on the roads it was designed and fo the people it was designed for.

The first thing we noticed was just how pretty the Le Mans Classic Clubsport is. It’s a G-Series 911, but smoother and exuding a slightly different character from a flat restomod. That’s down to the entire body being de-seamed, including the sunroof delete, and the new exaggerated headlights. As predominant as those headlights is also the 2.7 Carrera RS style ducktail and the aerodynamic side mirrors.

For around $325,000 and a donor car, the buyers for the 10 cars available will be expecting attention to detail, and there’s a lot of that. The soundproofing has been removed and modern lightweight carpet replaces the old ones, then color matched to the exterior color scheme are the ST-style touring seats in black leather with houndstooth inserts. The color theme is carried on throughout the inside, including the floor mats, door pulls, seat belts and dials.

The engine has been heavily tweaked, but to some 300 horsepower may seem slow. However, it’s only pushing 2138 lbs of 911 and will go from 0-60 in 4.4 seconds and top out at 170mph. The Le Mans Classic Clubsport isn’t about power though, it’s about the feel of a classic Porsche being taken to the degree it deserves as a pure driving machine. It’s not aimed directly at the racetrack and it’s not a grocery getting showpiece. It’s for the road and an engaged driver that wants the soundtrack of an air-cooled engine that hits its peak power near the top of a 7,800rpm rev-range. For that, the Paul Stephens Porsche 911  Le Mans Classic Clubsport deserves all the attention it’s getting.

Ian's obsession with cars started young and has left him stranded miles off-road in Land Rovers, being lost far from home in hot hatches, going sideways in rallycross cars, being propelled forward in supercars and, more sensibly, standing in fields staring at classic cars. His first job was as a mechanic, then he trained as a driving instructor before going into media production.

The automotive itch never left though, and he realized writing about cars is his true calling. However, that doesn’t stop Wright from also hosting the Both Hand Drive podcast.
