911 Carrera RS 2.7 Lightweight Offered at $1.1 million
Most successful Carrera RS 2.7 Lightweight of all time is one of only 17 right-hand-drive models built.
Obviously, it isn’t every day that you see a 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Lightweight come up for sale. After all, only 200 of these amazing cars were ever produced. And only a mere 17 of those were right-hand drive. So when one of those 17 comes up for sale, it’s truly something special. Especially when many consider it to be the most successful rallying 2.7 Carrera RS of all time.
But that’s exactly the car that crossed the block at RM Sotheby’s London auction on September 6. This particular car, the last sold in Great Britain, participated in close to 40 rally events in its career. And it racked up wins in the 1974 Circuit of Ireland, Donegal International, and Castrol Manx International Rallies.
The car was originally bought and campaigned by Harold Morley, Britain’s 1972 Motoring News Rally Champion. He used it in three international rally events before selling the car to Irish driver Cathal Curley. It was then that the car went on to enjoy great success and garner quite a bit of fame. Before changing hands several more times, the RS 2.7 Lightweight was featured in several Porsche and Dunlop print ads.
After many years and many races, the 911 sat dormant until undergoing a meticulous restoration back in 2010. An incredible level of detail went into the restoration, which was completed in 2014. It even got to “race” one more time, taking place in a re-enactment in Ireland.
A car this special doesn’t pop up too often, but we’re glad it did. Mostly because it gives us a chance to relive a little slice of Porsche history. But with an auction estimate somewhere around $1.1 million, the prospective buyer was likely a Porsche enthusiast with a fat wallet.
