2020 Porsche 992 911

A shadowy leaked image of the new Porsche 992 911 rear end sent the Internet into a fury. But here’s what it’ll really look like.

Oddly enough, it feels like we’ve spent all of 2018 waiting for the 2020 Porsche 992 911 to finally shed its camo and reveal itself. But this unwavering anticipation is wholly justified, of course. After all, we’re talking about perhaps the most iconic sports car model of all-time. Even though the evolution of the 911 is deliberate and oftentimes painfully slow, we still obsess over each passing generation. Because, hey, a new 911 is always a big deal. No matter how little it changes over the previous model.

The Porsche 992 911 certainly appears to be following in the footsteps of its predecessors, that’s for sure. The front end looks to be virtually indistinguishable from the 991.2, as is the vast majority of its now-legendary shape. But out back, it’s a completely different story. Though instantly recognizable as a Porsche, the rear of the 992 looks, well, different. In a retro futuristic kinda way.

We just received our first unadulterated, uncovered view of the 992’s rump. And reactions to that shadowy photo were, shall we say, a bit negative. But that was a pre-production model in poor lighting, so we had our resident artist draw up what we feel the production 911 will really look like from the backside. In this case, things look a little less RoboCop and a little more realistic than that shadowy image projects. The singular, wide red taillight and third brake light shine through. As does the unmistakable “Porsche” script.

The quad tailpipes, basically invisible in the leaked photo, are now fully on display as well. And we think you’ll agree that all of this makes the controversial backside of the Porsche 992 911 a little easier on the eyes. It also falls closer in line to what we’ve seen in other spy photos. So you can bet it’ll be pretty darn close (if not dead on) to what we finally see when Porsche decides to officially show us the new 911 in the flesh.

Until then, in the words of great NFL quarterback Aaron Rogers, “R-E-L-A-X,” Porsche diehards. You may not have to find some giant paper bag to fit over your 992’s rump, after all.
