2020 Geneva Motor Show Cancelled Due to Coronavirus Threat
Federal government cancels major events until March 15, and scheduled vehicle debuts, including from Porsche, will now take place online.
The 90th edition of the Geneva International Motor Show (GIMS), which was set for March 5-15, will not take place. This is in conjunction with the Federal Council of February 28, 2020, that no events with more than 1,000 people are allowed to take place until March 15, 2020. The decision falls three days before the opening of the exhibition to the media.
As a result, Porsche, BMW, Bentley, and presumably other automakers have shifted gears and will take to the Internet for the debuts they previously had planned for the 2020 Geneva International Motor Show. While their decisions make sense, the advent of online streaming severely hampered the impact of physical shows several years ago. These latest events may do them in permanently.
“We regret this situation, but the health of all participants is our and our exhibitors’ top priority,” said Maurice Turrettini, Chairman of the event’s Foundation Board. “We would like to warmly thank all those involved in the organization of the 2020 edition of GIMS. This is a tremendous loss for the manufacturers who have invested massively in their presence in Geneva. However, we are convinced that they will understand this decision.”
A few days before the opening of the event, the construction of the stands was very nearly complete. A week ago, during the press conferences announcing the 2020 auto how, there was nothing to suggest that such a measure was necessary. The situation changed with the appearance of the first confirmed coronavirus diseases in Switzerland and the injunction of the Federal Council on Feb. 28.
Tickets purchased for the event will be refunded. Get more details here.
