Moaning sound, possibly loss of ac. Fan?
2006 CS Ti. My wife told me today she heard a moaning sound a couple of times and that the ac seemed to not be working (or at least the fan didn't seem to be worling?). The sound stopped when she put the climate control in econ. No screeching like a belt. I'm wondering if it might be the fan. I looked everything over and ran it but didn't see any problem. Is the ac fan (not the interior fan, but the condenser fan) the one on the left (when looking from the front)?

I'm not sure on the Cayenne HVAC system, but on the 997, the econ button turns off the A/C compressor. Does changing the fan speed manually do anything?

The first places to look are the brushes in the blower motor and/or the resistor behind the glove box.
Play with the fan speed. When they first start acting up you will notice it the most at full speed. You also could be low on freon and the compressor clutch tripped out if the refrigerant pressure went too low.

Thanks for the replies. As far as I know it has not recurred. Although my wife said the interior fan didn't seem to be working she also said it stopped when put in econ mode. I'm sure econ disengages the AC compressor clutch, it also turns off the left side radiator fan (or condensor fan). If it is the interior fan I would expect it to continue with it in econ. I'll let ya know if I find anything.

The noise came back today while my son was driving the car and he was able to record it. Definitely the blower fan. The sound stopped when he simply decreased the fan speed to lowest setting. Going to pull it this weekend and see if there's just junk in there or if the bearings are going. At least this is not an expensive fix.

You can see the two brushes and their contact withe commutator if you look through the squirrel cage. If they need to be replaced you need to pull it off to get to them, but entire replacement fan motors can be found for $80-200 online if you don't want to deal with it.

I've had the fan and regulator out in order to check things. The blower motor and fan look fine and work normally (I tested it out of the housing and it has plenty of torque and speed looks normal). I drove it for 40+ minutes with no problems. I did not see any debris in the housing. Guess we'll just have to keep an eye on it.

Mine AC was groaning and it was low on gas. A top up fixed the moaning groaning However there is a small leak so its going to happen again (been good for over a year so must be a slow leak).

It's actually more of a buzzing sound. My son took a video and you can hear it through the vents. My wife also said the airflow decreased, thus less cool air.

A buzzing might be some debris. Mine moaned just before it died completely. I would line up a replacement. It was an easy job. There are a couple threads here talking about it.

This is what happened to my GPS, it was unrelated to AC or the fan, so I did not post anything yet on your thread , but you might want to check it out.

Checked ac charge. Low, but within spec
