Default Mobil 1 0w 40 or Castrol Edge 5w 30 Oil

Hi all

Was caught out the other day in my 2004 CTT 955 when the engine oil level light came on and i needed to use the car. I had some recently opened Castrol Edge 5w 30 fully synthetic oil in my garage so rather than running it dry i added a small amount of the 5w 30.

Since then i have called my local parts store and the guy there tells me that 0w 40 is now an old grade and they stock 5w 30 these days. He had no idea i had 5w 30 at home.

Is that true? I have read that the 955 CTT needs 0w 40 but wanted to check here before i buy it.

Secondly, is 5w 30 ok to use in the short term or even longer term perhaps?

Car has 110k miles if that matters?

Thanks

Carl

I wouldn't use 5w30. It's better than nothing for a top-up, but almost every case of Cayenne S cylinder wall scoring (if not all of them) that I saw were using 5w30.
Just my opinion.

I can't speak for the older models, as this 2013 is my first Porsche. But the owner manual is clear that owners should only use engine oils that carry the Porsche-approval code: A40 for the gasoline engines, C30 for the diesels. Click here for oils that meet A40 spec.

I use Motul in all my cars. It's light years ahead of Mobil 1.

Local parts shop had some Mobil 1 0w 40 on the shelf so got a litre and will fill up for now.

Its due a service in a few months so will get it all dropped out and new oil put in, possibly even the Motul.

Thanks for the help everyone.

FYI. I use the Mobil 1 0w-40 factory fill as well.

If you are in the USA, you can go to Walmart and get it on their shelf. Here in Atlanta it cost me about $6.47 a quart.

I also use Mobil 1 0W-40 in my 2010 GTS. It IS Porsche approved.

I also have Blackstone Labs do oil analysis on all my vehicles. The Porsche comes back with comments like 'great engine - oil is doing its job', 'wear levels are below average, Nice!' etc. after 10,000 mile oil changes. Plus Wal-Mart is now carrying 5qt jugs of the 0W-40 Mobil 1 for $25.

I run Mobil 1 in all my 10 other vehicles. All of them now come back with similar results which was not true when I was running other oil (non-synthetic).

I was just thinking the other day it would be nice if they carried the 0w-40 in a 5 quart bottle

Naw, you'll never get a consensus about engine oil. I personally am using Pennzoil Ultra Euro L. As long as the container indicates a Porsche A40 or C30 approval, no one will likely have a valid argument against your choice.

Mighty tame for an oil thread......

Personally use Motul 8100 X-cess in 5w40. Motul 5w40

993 gets either 15w50 or 20w50.

Now there is a mental image....if you go to Walmart to buy oil for your Porsche...do you have to wear one of those spandex outfits?

Oil threads can get pretty heated. I use Redline 5W-40 which is a oil that exceeds Porsche's specs and is a Porsche approved weight. I would say that Redline, Amsoil, Motul and others probably exceed the HTHS (High Temp, High Shear) rating of Mobil 0W-40. Porsche had the ridiculous 20K oil change interval at first and I'm sure Mobil is making them a screaming cheap marketing deal on their oil, but with the cylinder wall scoring I wanted the 5W-40 and an oil that was better than their specs, plus I only go around 7K~8K change interval. Lets the spears fly.
