FYI, while M1 15W50 was a very good oil prior to the reformulations. 0W40 is very good and better than 15W50, but unless you live in the North Pole or for winter deep cold driving it is not recommended.

FILL your engine with a full payload of 5W40 or 5W50, you won't look back and you will have a quieter engine with less oil consumption.

Motul is VERY good, I still would try the 5W50 or 5W40 first.. 3000 mile oil changes with any of these two oils has far BETTER wear outcomes than having $14 quart Motul swinging a 5000 or 6000 mile duty cycle! Especially if you track your car..

My X50 easily eats a litre of oil every 1000 miles - that being the case, am I not effectively replacing the oil every 1000 miles odd anyway ? Or is a full drain and oil replacement going to reach parts that simply adding more oil in won't do ? Thx.

Zero, are you telling me that since you keep on adding oil, that you don't change it? I cringe when guys say that the oil is okay for 7500 to 10K.. Why, when these engines COST so much and oil is so cheap.

Am I missing something here?

Kevin, I change once a year which is around 4000 miles, but in the interim I probably stick 3-4 litres of oil into it to refresh the oil its eaten. That is the thrust of my question... hypothetically, if you keep having to top the oil up, is that the same as effectively doing an oil change ?

Zero, it isn't a oil change. Engines will tend to burn more oil when the oil gets dirty and worn. The sheer properties go south and you burn more oil. Running the Turbo diesel M1 5W40 will cut your consumption down in 1/2 I would guess.

You are adding fresh oil but only because you have to due to a low condition. It's not like you are adding 4 qrts at once.

Understand, thanks.

Had 15W-50 added 2000 miles ago when the car had its last service, and since then have been topping it up with 0W-40.

However, I need to locate a big batch of M1 5W-50 and I'll stick with it.

I can't hammer this point hard enough..

Mobil 1 5W40 Turbo Diesel and Truck is the oil to use for top up, oil changes. Don't delay, if you guys are having high consumption and smoking at start up>> Make the change. Forget the 5W50 if you can't get it.

You can find a couple of sources of Mobil 1 5W-50 at the links below. Got mine from AVLUBE.

That's my experience - M1 5W50 - quieter and less consumption.

Is the M1 5W40 Turbo Diesel oil better than the M1 5W50?

I was just to the dealer here in NE PA and wouldn't you know it... their oil system barrels are now filled with 5w-40 for the service technicians...
