A 993, even with a replacement engine correctly priced, would sell quickly.
Pretty much anything correctly priced sells quickly. Similar to this guy's car in a 993 priced at $50K+ would sit. See my post above about what the car dealer gave in trade. 996s are the current day 944.

I have zero idea why people get worked up over prices. Porsche, especially. The market works extremely efficiently. Even in the Olden Days. Lived through the 2.7L 911 era? Or how much a 928 cost new versus a 911, then five years later. Etc, etc, etc.

How many offers has the OP received for his undervalued 996 so far?

I will trade you this under valued classic for your undervalued 996.

Hello...

In addition to your car I also offered a few thousand more than I offered you for another 993 at a dealer. And I looked at a couple of cars in Texas. One of those had been in a accident and the repair work looked awful. The other didn't save me any money over the dealer here in Los Angeles. Then I just missed a '93 964 back east. For a week I kept hoping the guy's buyer would flake out. In the meantime I looked at a couple of other 964s but they didn't do it for me. Then I got desperate and looked at a very low miles Boxster but it was a train wreck waiting to happen. Driving home I spotted the car I bought sitting on a VW Dealer's lot. On a lark I went and drove it and was quite taken by the car. I preferred the air cooled cars because they were smaller...but in the flesh and on the road I found the 996 was much more car than I had expected. And combined with the price I decide that it didn't make sense to pay more for cars that didn't offer more. I did minor due diligence and drove the 996 home that evening.

I still think the 993 is prettier looking and I like the pit pull character of the 964. But I certainly do not think they are "better" cars than the 996, and so I don't think they are worth the price premium they demand over the 996. They might be in fashion but I don't think they are better cars. Would I swap my 996 for a 993? If I like the deal, yes...if not, no. Would I put a little money on the table? For a very special car, yes. But for any of the cars I did not buy...no. In fact I would not trade my 996 for the 993s I did not buy. However I did talk tonight with the fellow who owns my old 993 and for that specific car I'd put money on the table.

Wow. I ah...err...wow. John, it's going to be a very small universe of people on this forum that could be convinced that a 996 is better than a like-for-like 993 model. The people here like 993's because they're special (not necessary superior in all measurable aspects). I have a very stock 95 C2 Tip, which is at about the bottom of the 993 value spectrum (though low miles and good condition, so not a cheap beater). And even then, for a straight across trade I'd consider a 996 turbo, maybe, if it were is equivalent condition. That, I'm afraid, is just the state of the air cooled market these days.

I didn't say the 996 was better than the 993...I said the 993 wasn't "better" than the 996. I'm trying to help someone on RL buy a 993...he is out of California and a car he is interested in is local to me. As I said...for a special car I'd put money on the table...but not just for any 993.

Buddy, for your own sake, you might wanna give it rest and close this thread.

After a few weeks, 5 pages of mindless drivel and no takers, it's clear your misguided idea for a trade are not gonna work, and your feelings about the 996 vs. the 993 are yours alone.

Close the thread. It's starting to get sad

I'd reintroduce this same thread on April 1st. It would make sense then.

Less sense on April 1, 2015 (as 993 prices continue to climb and 996's fall)
More sense on April 1, 2004 (when the OP's car was fairly new and the market didn't yet realize how poorly designed/engineered the 996 was)

Default Funny article on Jalopnik

http://jalopnik.com/here-s-why-the-9...-ca-1665776219

Doug DeMuro has written a very funny article on Jalopnik titled "Here's Why The 996 Turbo Is The Best 911 You Can Buy".

Along with his very well written and humorous article about the 996 Turbo he makes this observation about the value of other 996s ....

Speaking of value: by far the best part of the 996 Turbo is pricing. You see, most Porsche purists believe that other 996 models are crap, so they've gotten pretty cheap. Really cheap. Insanely cheap. I mean, go on RennList right now, and you'll see guys offering to trade them for Chipotle gift cards.

But it makes better and better sense as a April Fool's joke in future years. The joke will become even funnier with time.

That's the funniest thing I've read in a while... Nice find.
