I like the 997 very much, but in some respects, it's just a newer, nicer 996: still mass produced in relatively huge numbers, still depreciating, except for special models, i.e. GT3 RS, etc.

The OP looked at my 1995 993 C2 when I had it for sale. He offered me $8k below my asking price. OP I understand you don't want to pay the current market price for a 993. But, it is what it is. I believe he wen't out and bought a 996 after shopping for a 993. He now knows the 996 experience isn't the same. OP, do yourself a favor and go find a clean 993 and pay the market value for it and be done. Pay to play!

That would be a poor reason to get one.
Anyway, as I said over one the Facebook 993 Rennlisters page on my way out of town last week......one of my car dealer customers took a decent enough looking 89K mile '99 manual coupe with a factory replacement engine at some point along the way. They gave $7K. (No, they won't pass it along to me.)

Interesting posts and timelines from the OP; looks like buyer remorse in less than 2 months.
10-4-14: I sold my 993 back in 1998 and have been wandering in the wilderness ever since. Last week, after searching for a 993 or 964, I discovered that the 996 was the deal of the century. So I bought one...
10-15-14: The great value of the 996 isn't what they will be worth in ten years, but how easy they are to afford now and how much fun they are to drive...every day.
10-16-14: I've been driving it now for 20 days. 2003 with 39700 miles. I'm not in a rush to do anything but enjoy it. My first impression is that it feel like a combination of the RS America and the 993 that I owned back in the mid to late 90s.
10-20-14: I paid between 2 and 4 thousand over market average for my car...an 03 with 39k miles...$29k dollars. And so far I have no regrets. The market is the market and that is just a fact, but at the same time I think it has undervalued the cars for several reasons...just as it is overvaluing cars such as the 993s and 964s, which just a few years ago were going for what the 996s are going for today. In fact looking at KBB on the 993 and 964 will leave you shaking your head trying to make sense of it all.
10-21-14: So how does my 2003 996 stack up to my long gone 993 and 964 RS America? It does really well...not as clean a look at the 993 or 964 but a great daily driver and at a price that makes it like a give away. If resale is important than I think the 996 offers much more long term upside than the 993 or 964 because they have already been moving up for three or four years, while the 996 is down in its price basement.
10-30-14: The 993 is one of the most balanced and beautiful of all 911s. And that is why they have been going up in value.
11-3-14: The only investment grade 911 in the current market place, in my opinion, is the 996.
11-12-14: Is a troll like an elf? Does this mean no one wants to trade me their 993 for my 996? Oh well, back to the 996 forum.
11-22-14: Let's not worry about price at this stage...I'm just looking for someone who has a 993 C2...prefer 1995...that might like to trade for a 2003 996 C2 w/ 41000 miles and no issues.

I think this post on Pelican from a poor guy trying to sell his 996 says it all (check out his screen name...).

A 993, even with a replacement engine correctly priced, would sell quickly.
